German Student From IIT-M Was Asked To Leave India After He Participated In CAA Protests

The entire country, from Delhi to Chennai, is peacefully protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act at the moment and it's great to see how everyone has united to fight bigotry.

Among the lakhs and lakhs of protestors was Jakob Lindenthal, a German guy studying Master of Science (Physics) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He, along with thousands of people, held up signs and took part in a bunch of protests in his city, but now because of that, he's being kicked out of the country.

While talking to The Federal, he revealed how immigration officials confronted him about his participation in protests and how he was asked to leave the country.

Recounting the entire incident, he said, "I went there and the initial conversation was friendly. So I told them everything. Soon, they started confronting me on why I participated in protests held against the Citizenship Act in Chennai. Only then I realised things were getting serious."

He went on, "They told me the protests held in the city were all without permission. And of all, I do not have any permission to participate in such protests as I have come here on students' visa. Only then I came to know that all the protests that took place in the city were illegal. I have come here on a student visa. According to its rules, whatever I do apart from studying is a violation of the visa. So, I cannot take part in such protests."

He tried to apologise, but it was in vain.

Overall, he was unhappy with how the immigration officials handled the situation. He said, "There was a leaflet on the table. I expected them to give it to me. But, when asked, they refused and asked me to leave. I did not even know the name of the immigration officials who spoke to me."

No official reason has been given by the immigration department, but it's not a coincidence that this happened right after he took part in protests. Moreover, one of his classmates said police had collected his details when he was protesting outside the campus.

Another friend of his said, "He did not only protest inside the campus against the amended law but also participated in the demonstrations organised in Valluvar Kottam and other places in Chennai."

People are obviously not happy about it.

It shows our sick mindset to deport foreign students like Jakob Lindenthal, MS exchange student from Germany in department of Physics at IIT Madras for his participation in the anti CAA protests.
If Germany reacts, what the hell Indians will do there? #NRC_CAA_Protest @naukarshah pic.twitter.com/xLWX9h3OAU

People are proud of him.

I was a student in Germany. German students are taught about the crimes committed by their country, about equality and freedom, civic responsibility and more about the caste system than Indians are. Proud of Jakob Lindenthal. This is what I want for my country. Indian children 1/ https://t.co/yno6c63KhS

He's warning everyone.

India should thank Jakob Lindenthal, the German student who has tried to warn Indians, though he didn't have to.

Instead, he's been asked to leave India. #CAA_NRC_Protest

The right side.

Dear Jakob Lindenthal,we are sry that authoritarian regime of our country has asked you to leave just because U participated in a peaceful protest. It is a reflection on sad affairs of India.
Thank you for standing against fascism& on the right side of humanity #DankeSchonJakob

He was protesting for a country that's not even his.

It is learnt that Jakob Lindenthal, an exchange student at @iitmadras, from Dresden Germany, is asked to leave India asap. Recently he joined #CAA_NRCProtests in Chennai. pic.twitter.com/ZeS8h6ibfR
