Kyle Jamieson: New Zealand's '6-Feet-8-Inch Giant' Who Can Trouble India In Upcoming ODI Series

Ahead of India's tour of New Zealand, while Virat Kohli might have ruled out the possibility of exacting revenge on the Kiwis for their World Cup ouster last year, the exploits of a rampant Indian team on the field in the past week speak otherwise. The touring Indian brigade recorded two consecutive triumphs before notching up a thrilling 'Super Over' win in the 3rd T20I to eventually seal the five-match series.

With the T20I series done and dusted, the Kiwis will now be focussing on the three ODIs next month to peg India back for the losses in the shortest format. But, it is going to be an uphill battle for the hosts, especially during the injury-forced absence of Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry.

In a bid to fill the void in their pace battery, the Kiwis have included Scott Kuggeleijn, Hamish Bennett and Kyle Jamieson in their ODI squad. Amongst the Kiwi trio, one man stands out, and by quite a margin. While we've seen the likes of Bennett and Kuggeleijn in the T20I series, the Kiwis appear to have decided to unleash Jamieson, their tallest cricketer in history, on India in the three-match ODI series slated to begin from 5th February.

Standing tall at a staggering six feet and eight inches (2.03 metre), Jamieson is even taller than New Zealand's batting coach Peter Fulton who is popularly known as 'Two-metre Peter' for his height (6'6). So, who's this Jamieson and where has he been hiding all this while? Let's take a look.

Born in Auckland, bred in Canterbury and now in line to make his senior team debut, Jamieson is a classic fast bowler who makes full use of his tall frame and sheer pace to bounce batsmen out. He was New Zealand's second-highest wicket-taker (7 scalps in 4 games) during the 2014 U-19 World Cup and has been a regular in the 'A' side, playing 13 matches and bagging 15 wickets, over the past few seasons.

Other than his impressive bowling, Jamieson is also handy with the bat lower down the order. The right-hander has a batting average of over 31 and a strike rate of over 112 in List A cricket. He also has three first-class fifties and a List A half-century to his name. In 2018, he had slammed a brilliant 111-ball 101 to trouble the likes of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood during England's warm-up tie at Seddon Park.

For someone who looks in Morne Morkel's mould, only taller by three inches, Jamieson's ability to extract extra bounce and ability to swing the ball can trouble the likes of in-form Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. Having lost the T20I series, New Zealand will hope that their 'giant weapon' comes out all guns blazing in the upcoming ODI series to peg India back.
