The 92nd Academy Awards were full of some insane excitement and some pleasantly happy winners which included Joaquin Phoenix winning the Oscar for the âbest actorâ and Korean drama Parasite creating history by winning the âbest pictureâ award and also the âbest screenplayâ award as well.
So while the world has been enjoying this win which is culturally a very powerful win for non-English movies, some desi fans back home are oddly upset over a claim that Bong Joon Hoâs award winning movie is actually a rip-off from a Kollywood movie called Minsara Kanna which featured superstar Vijay and Khushboo. Parasite tells the tale of a poor family integrating itself into a wealthy family for economic benefits. The movie is being hailed for magnificently questioning the deep-rooted capitalism in the world but if one looks at the plot of Minsara Kanna, the Telugu movie also tells the story of a wealthy man who convinces his family members to be employed by the rich family of his lady love.
While one is a love story with similar sub plots and the other is a mockery of capitalism, fans of both the movies are in a tug of war on social media.
@khushsundar Today parasite movie got 4 oscar awards but after watching the movie I came to know the plot of the story which was taken from Minsara kanna. In minsara kanna all the family was employed for love help& the same here parasite all the family were employed for survival.
â rajeshkannan (@rajesh7) February 10, 2020Also just hit me that Minsara Kanna( Vijay padam) is same storyline/plot as Parasite... just diff kind of twists & turns.. #aarootales
â Aarti (@talesfromaaroo) February 10, 2020Watched korean movie #parasite lately & realized that the movie is inspired by @actorvijay 's tamil movie #minsarakanna directed by k.s.ravikumar.Parasite is a worldwide hit,but we made such films long back.#legendksravikumar#parasiteisminsarakanna#ThalapathyVijay#Thalapathy
â Andrew Rajkumar (@iamrajdrew) February 5, 2020While few fans are sure it is âinspiredâ and even copied from this Telugu hit, Parasite fans beg to differ.
I don't think so.
A very tiny portion of the plot may seem like they have similar storyline with Parasite.
But the story Parasite is telling very different.
As a #Thalapathy fan I want to make a statement both movies r not the same #MinsaraKanna is more about d rich female who does not want any men working for her and parasite is more about the lifestyle of rich & the poor. Please donât compare like sillies but there are similarities
â AUS Thalapathy Maniac â¢ï¸ (@Thalapthy_Mania) February 11, 2020Well, looks this debate is not cooling down anytime soon but a 2019 Korean drama being inspired (if at all) from a 1999 Telugu hit would be quite surprising!
