Believe it or not, though, Sherlock Holmes was as much about solving crimes and fighting Professor Moriarty as much as he was about appearances and style. With that being said, each of the actors who took up the mantle, played with style and fashion, in their own unique way, similar to the way they portrayed the character.

Robert Downey Jr played Sherlock in the most unique manner. Never have we seen a Sherlock Holmes, who was so comfortable in dressing up like a tramp, all the time. Don’t get us wrong, we really love his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes and would sit down to watch it on any given day. But his slack of personal grooming, and dressing up shabbily was just an eyesore.

Jonny Lee Miller was quite a stylish Sherlock if we’re being honest. Given that this is a rendition of Sherlock Holmes, if he was in New York in the mid-2010s, Jonny had some really tastefully creates ensembles. We particularly like the manner in which he would go for very sleek looking silhouettes, and would button up the top button of his shirt, while not wearing a tie. There was a touch of old-school charm, in this rather modern and contemporary portrayal of Sherlock.

Although the movie isn’t out yet, going by the trailer of Enola Holmes, we have to say, Henry Cavill looks amazing in an outfit from the late 1800s or the late Victorian period. The Victorian collars, the bow-ties, the three-piece three buttoned suits - all of these has really got us humming. However, it is Henry Cavill’s curly hair that steals the show for us. Just how good is that hairstyle, right?

Now, if you truly are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you just have to watch Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes. All cinephiles and proper fans of Sherlock Holmes would agree that Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of Sherlock has become the definitive Sherlock Holmes. His portrayal as his sense of style was as classy as things could get.

Ian McKellen played a rather old and aged Sherlock Holmes in Mr Holmes. The stovepipe hat and club collared shirts may seem antiquated now, but they do not look out of place at all. Seriously, his portrayal of the sleuth really made us wish that the aesthetics from this era made a comeback.

You had to have seen this one coming. Without a doubt Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes was the best, all things considered. If you really want a masterclass on suiting up with panache and an unparalleled sharpness, we suggest you rewatch the series. And that black overcoat (yes, it’s an overcoat, not a trenchcoat) that he wore has its own separate fanbase.
