Dubai Gets Its First Robot Police Officer And Breaking The Rules Just Became A Whole Lot Riskier

If you are currently travelling to Dubai or going there anytime soon, chances are you will be welcomed by an unusual sight – a robot cop patrolling the streets. This police officer is making its debut today and it will apparently kickstart the first phase of the integration of robots into the police force. This uniformed robot was seen, yesterday, greeting visitors at the Gulf Information Security & Expo Conference. Now, while we all were busy fancying the 1987 movie ‘RoboCop’, Dubai just went a step ahead and turned it into a reality.

So, let’s step into this futuristic police force and see what else this cop can do apart from looking dapper and cool in his uniform. This is the world’s first Robocop which is 5 ft 5 inches tall and was reportedly designed by the Dubai police, with assistance from IBM’s Watson and Google. If reports are to be believed then by 2030, robocops will make up a quarter of the city’s police force.

Reportedly, this robot is an ungraded version of a prototype that was unveiled at the electronic trade show in Dubai last year. So what are the features it boasts? It comes with a built-in tablet placed at the chest for people to report crimes, access public information and pay traffic tickets. It can read facial expressions, knows and speaks multiple languages, can salute and bow, and recognizes hand gestures from up to 1.5 metres away.

While this approach is a great and wonderful to say the least, only time will tell how receptive people are towards it.
