One of the best southpaws to have batted for the Indian cricket team, Yuvraj Singh’s problems with getting into trouble in the public eye continue to haunt him even after the lockdown gets lifted and the world reopens once again.
Back in June 2020, the retired Indian cricketer came under fire for his casteist remarks while in a conversation with fellow teammate Rohit Sharma during an Instagram Live session and was forced to make a public apology on social media.
Yuvraj said 'bhangi' to chahal in live with rohit sharma
The word Yuvraj used for chahal was wrong.
So people trend #युवराज_सिंह_माफी_मांगोpic.twitter.com/Qxi8Y7q8HQ
“Yeh bh*ngi log ko kaam nahi hai yeh Yuzi aur isko (Kuldeep),” Yuvraj had said.
“Yuzi ko dekha kya video daala hai apni family ke saath. Maine usko wahi bola ki apne baap ko nacha raha hai, pagal toh nahi hai tu,” Rohit replied.
As the video went viral, infamous hashtag #YuvrajSinghMaafiMango started trending on Twitter with thousands of enraged people from all over the country demanding that the cricketer admits his mistake and apologises to the community for hurting their sentiments.
#युवराज_सिंह_माफी_मांगो Many people oppose racism in America, but support casteism in India. In America, they want American people to treat Indians well. But in the country, they do not treat Dalits and backwards well.

Within a couple of days, Singh did issue a public statement, clarifying his take on the issue and how he had no intentions of hurting anyone’s feelings.

“This is to clarify that I have never believed in any kind of disparity, be it on the basis of caste, colour, creed or gender. I have given and continue to spend my life for the welfare of people. I believe in the dignity of life and respect each individual without exception,” read the statement.
“I understand that while I was having a conversation with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was unwarranted. However, as a responsible India I want to say that if I have unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments or feelings, I would like to express regret for the same. My love for India and all its people is eternal,” the statement added.
Turns out Singh’s apology failed to convince everyone as over eight months later an advocate from the Hisar Division of Haryana lodged a complaint against the veteran athlete.
According to an India Today report, the Hansi police in Hisar have filed a case under Sections 153, 153A, 295, 505 of IPC, besides sections 3 (1) (r) and 3 (1) (s) of the SC/ST Act.
Yuvraj Singh has been facing some trouble in the eyes of his fans for the past couple of years, especially for showing his support towards Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi’s NGO which was meant to provide aid towards Covid-19 victims.
These are testing times, it’s time to lookout for each other specially the ones who are lesser fortunate. Lets do our bit, I am supporting @SAfridiOfficial & @SAFoundationN in this noble initiative of covid19. Pls donate on https://t.co/yHtpolQbMx #StayHome @harbhajan_singh pic.twitter.com/HfKPABZ6Wh

Singh would then go on to backtrack on his support following Afridi’s eyebrow-raising comments against the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and calling his “darpok (coward)”.
Really disappointed by @SAfridiOfficial‘s comments on our Hon’b PM @narendramodi ji. As a responsible Indian who has played for the country, I will never accept such words. I made an appeal on your behest for the sake of humanity. But never again.

The 39-year old also continues to make headlines every now and then after his father Yograj Singh, a former cricketer and actor himself, makes controversial comments against his son’s former teammates and the certain sections of the Indian society as well.
The biggest incident occurred in December 2020 when Yograj Singh insulted Hindu women during the farmers’ protest.
“Yeh woh log hai jinhone hamare saath gaddari ki hai, yeh woh kaum hai jinhone hazaron saal gulami ki 5000, 7000 saal (these are those people who have betrayed us, this community has been slaves for thousands of years),” Singh had said.
“Inki aurate take-take ke bhaw bikti thi ((their women were sold for pennies),” he’d further added.
