In a tragic development, 49-year-old Rahmat Ahsan, a shopkeeper from the AIIMS campus, passed away after falling sick and failing to procure a bed at the hospital.

According to reports, Rahmat was a familiar name with the resident doctors and medical students of AIIMS who knew him as someone who had been around for as long as they could remember.

AIIMS SU raising funds for Rahmat Uncle. He served COVID warriors during time of crisis but couldn’t get bed for himself. Govt won’t consider him Covid Warrior & neither gives him compensation. Now it’s our responsibility to donate & help the bereaved family #RIP pic.twitter.com/fW0BxWnvaA

Rahmat had been suffering from fever and restlessness along with high blood pressure, and on Wednesday he is said to have had trouble breathing.

However, his family could not procure him a bed in the hospital, following which he breathed his last on Thursday morning, according to an Indian Express report.

The last memory people have of his store is of a message on the closed shop saying that he could not open the shop as he was not feeling well.

“He had a fever for a few days and on Wednesday it got severe. We tried to get him admitted to the DRDO facility and could not. We knew that there were no beds in AIIMS so we gave up. His antigen test was positive but we could not get an RTPCR test done. Finally, we arranged an oxygen cylinder at home through his contacts. But he passed away at 6:30 am on Thursday.” Rahmat’s brother-in-law Abu Zeeshan said.

Rahmat, who ran a general store, for over 20 years is survived by his wife and two daughters aged 14 and 12.

Meanwhile, India has reportedly hit a rate of one COVID-19 reported death every four minutes in New Delhi, as the acute shortage of oxygen tanks among other items including hospital beds is taking a toll.
