5 Films On Afghanistan Which Explain How War Affected The Lives Of Its People


While the entire world is currently shocked at Taliban taking control of Afghanistan and how the helpless people are trying to flee the country, it is not surprising to realise that just because the country has not been in the news actively, that doesn’t mean that life was anywhere ‘normal’ there. Here are 5 movies which will give a fair background of how war changed the lives of people residing in the country: 

1. Zero Dark Thirty

This American thriller follows a group of CIA executives led by an agent named Maya, who spend more than a decade looking for one Osama Bin Laden post the 9/11 attacks. The controversial depiction of torture and extensive showcase of military operations. It is a fictionalised depiction of Bin laden’s capture but a gripping watch indeed.

2. The Road To Guantanamo

This British docudrama written by Michael Winterbottom follows the captivity of three British Muslims who get arrested in Afghanistan and then later get detained at the Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

3. Restrepo

This gives you a dark peek into the war struck through the lens of a journalist and a photographer, who follows and spends time with a US Platoon in Afghanistan. This gives you a detailed insight into the lives of US soldiers serving time there.

4. Osama

This dark tale is a deep peek into the lives of people in war struck, Taliban controlled Afghanistan. A mother tries to disguise her daughter as a boy named Osama to escape the country. Soon the Taliban start recruiting young boys and they fear that the truth behind ‘Osama’ will be discovered.

5. Taxi To The Dark Side

This one shows the use of torture at the hands of American military in Afghanistan through the murder of an Afghani driver who was taken in for some interrogation at Bagram Air Base in 2002. It is concluded that the driver was resorted to extensive physical torture and making this as a premise, the movie explores how torture on citizens worked during the time of Bush administration.
