4 Fashion Stereotypes For Men That Are Officially Broken & No Longer Exist

Fashion has no gender. Or so we thought.

Unisex clothing is extremely uncommon even today. While women have widened their sartorial horizons by slipping into pantsuits and cargo pants (there’s hardly any men’s fashion item that women can’t or don’t pull off), some gender-based rules of fashion still exist for men.

While there is a long road to making fashion totally genderless and androgynous, men have managed to break some fashion rules and gender stereotypes when it comes to style.

Although a man carrying a flowy skirt, heels or sling bag is still rare, some fashion stereotypes that used to repel men earlier are now being embraced by them.

Here are four fashion stereotypes for men that are long gone and officially broken, for good:

1. Pink Is A 'Girly' Colour

The men’s section in any clothing store back in the day looked exceptionally dull and their wardrobe consisted of neutral colours like blues, greys, whites, browns and blacks.

However, now, men are now comfortable experimenting with pink, red and even neon hues. There are even wedding outfits and suits in pink that we have seen celebrities rocking.

The whole ‘pink is for girls and blue is for boys’ was a hoax anyway.

2. Bling is Off Limits

Speaking of men’s clothing being dull, the only blingy, shiny outfit they ever wore was the sherwani at their wedding.

However, now, bling has made an appearance on jackets, suits and almost all partywear categories for men. Look at this statement jacket worn by Shahid Kapoor.

3. Florals Are Not 'Manly'

Ugh! Why must we associate a print with one gender? The floral print is perfect for summer, beachwear and isn’t restricted to one gender.

Thankfully, floral shirts and tees have been one of the top trends in menswear for a couple of years and men are embracing this summer-perfect print as it should be.

4. Men’s Jewellery

Men have been wearing jewellery since the stone age. It was always a part of an Indian man’s attire. However, suddenly it became a woman’s thing and men were ridiculed for wearing chunky gold necklaces, unless they were rappers or Bappi Lahiri.

However, it is becoming a thing again and men are investing in cool dainty chains, rings, bracelets and earrings.
