If you own a dog then you’ll understand how awesome it feels to be greeted by those little bundles of joy wagging their tails in excitement and looking at you with sparkling eyes the moment you come home. Now imagine the level of happiness you will experience if you are welcomed by more than 700 dogs. Somewhere near the capital of Karnataka, there’s a three and a half acre farm where these dogs happily reside and it’s a sheer delight to watch them bark and jump in joy when their father comes home.

Meet the 45-year-old ‘Dog Father’, Rakesh Shukla, who owns nearly 735 dogs.  He shared his experience with the BBC while petting and caressing his dogs that include Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Rottweilers, Dachshunds, mongrels and a Pug. While most of these dogs are strays, others were abandoned by their owners. Every week, Rakesh spends three to four days on the farm. He says, “I’m the last stop for these dogs. They are no longer cute and cuddly. Many are sick and no longer wanted.” It’s upsetting to see that these dogs were abandoned at such a crucial time but there’s hope that they will be taken care of.

Reportedly, the latest additions in his team are 22 pedigree dogs owned by a businessman who was shot dead by criminals. 10 years ago, Rakesh founded his software company along with his wife in Bengaluru. He worked in Delhi and then moved to the United States and made his way back to India. Rakesh mentioned that “Life was all about buying big cars and expensive watches and living a fancy life. I had travelled and seen the world many times over, but then I was not happy.” He credits his happiness to Kavya, a 45-day-old Golden Retriever who came in his life in 2009 and changed it completely.
    © Facebook
Recalling his early days with Kavya, Rakesh said “When we got home, she went and hid in a corner. I got down to her level on the floor and I was calling out to her, she was looking at me, she was scared, but I could see she wanted to trust me.” He further added, “And that's when the moment happened - it was a physical feeling, my hair was tingling, I could feel a warm glow. And I've never needed to ask myself that question – 'why am I here?' – again after that.”

Whenever he came across any stray or abandoned dog, he brought it home. However, when his wife protested, he shifted them to his office. It was in the year 2012 that he purchased land in Doddballapur town and set up a “haven” for old and ailing dogs. Running the farm is not at all easy and as many as 10 people including trained veterinary assistants are hired to cook for them, care for them and feed them. The daily intake of these dogs is 200kg chicken and 200kg rice and the daily cost of running the dog shelter ranges from Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 50,000.
    © Facebook
Things were running smooth until last year, when some animal activists demanded that they should be allowed onto the farm. What’s more, he even received complaints for creating public unrest by keeping so many dogs while some demanded him to shut down the farm. To be honest, we don’t get it why people want the farm to be shut down. These dogs who were once abandoned or are ill, now have a home for themselves, who should anybody have problems with it. In the end, Rakesh said “I’ve made a pact with my dogs. We will part only when one of us kicks the bucket.” It’s great what Rakesh has been doing for all these dogs and we hope that this bond grows stronger with every passing year and both find solace in each other’s company.

This winter, if the cold ain’t your thing and you’re looking to get away from the monotony, to something lesser known and waiting to be discovered, let it be Jaisalmer! Why? Simple; it’s not done to death like Jaipur; it isn’t overrated like Udaipur—in all fairness, it’s true—it’s so much more than an Ajmer! I’m actually surprised more of you aren’t packing up to the decadence of the desert city. Think the Thar Desert; and if you’re a Bollywood fanatic, then, Mirzya.

What you don’t know about Jaisalmer is that there are tales of ghosts, legends, royals; and then, there is the desert, the close borders shared with Pakistan and just so much enigma. Move over the Northeast; if you truly want to discover how rich India is, you should travel here. Even the wind has a story to tell.
Travelling And Getting There Getting to Jaisalmer takes almost an entire day by road, if you’re travelling from Jodhpur. Getting to Jodhpur by flight takes a maximum of two hours, at most. The road trip is a mix of village life, small commercial hubs and barren land. On either side, you’ll see scavenger birds, deer and some carcass. You’ll see the village women travelling with matkas on their head, to reach a common well for water. Yes, the villages of Rajasthan still live a pretty crude life.

I was staying at the Suryagarh Hotel, which is located outside of the walled city and the road to which is sprinkled with windmills in the most picturesque way. Side note: Scenes from the recently released movie, Mirzya was shot around and about here. The peace and quiet that surrounds the property is a lot like the kind of silence that settles across the world, while no one is looking. It overwhelms you. The hotel welcomes you with the folk dancers of Rajasthan—something that I’d taken quite a fancy to during my travels there. I decided to spend the first night in—the road trip will do that to you, so have yourself well-stocked in with food, beverages and a kickass playlist; you’ll need it.
And if you think you might just run out of things to do, here’s what I did on my trip to the beautiful city.
    1. Explore The Thar Desert
Spend one entire day just driving around the Thar Desert; exploring the large expanses of cacti, deer, scavenger birds that are the size of a full grown cow sometimes. Usually, if you’re staying at a resort, they organize such an excursion for you. I had one such organized excursion by the Suryagarh Resort. The journey will take you through the various desert villages in the Thar where you’ll see women still walking to the village well to collect water. You’ll also discover the ruins of villages that were abandoned by the Paliwal Brahmins on the pretext of an ancient curse. While you don’t really see it as eerie; the silence and barrenness of the land will overwhelm you.
    2. Drive By The Pakistan Border  Look as far as your eyes let you. And when you notice the scenery blur, that's Pakistan.  Won't forget this one easily.  #TharDesert #NoMansLand #Horizon #Beyond #Pakistan #Border #Blur #FromWhereIStand #Countries #ATaleOfTwoCountries #KhabaFort #Ruins #Village #Legends #Desert #DesertExploration #Suryagarh #TravelDiaries

During my excursion of the Thar Desert, I stood on a hilltop from where I could see Indian land fade into Pakistani land with no demarcation. To the naked eye, it’s just land with trees, shrubs and broken houses and then the horizon. But, to the government officials, there’s a barrier, a border and a strict law that’s dividing the lands. Standing and looking onto that scene I itself gives you a surreal feeling.
    3. Explore The Villages And Forts
Amidst the desert and the barren land, you’ll come across ruined forts and temple structures. Don’t drive by these. Stop and take it in. One such fort we stopped by was the Khaba Fort which overlooks the ruined village of the Paliwal Brahmins in the middle of the desert. Our tour guide for the day was the hotel manager, Nakul Hada who gave us insight into the history behind the Khaba Fort. On a side note, while I didn’t find the abandoned villages eerie at all, I did find the fort structure exceptionally eerie (plus, I have a penchant for such things; I’m not even kidding you remotely). To add to it, while on our way down, one of my co-travellers slipped on one of the steps and sprained her ankle, someone else almost missed that step and I almost tripped on that step, too. Weird, huh?
    4. Indulge In The Kesar Kasturi  © Suryagarh
You might think this is a sweet dish; think again. It’s an alcoholic beverage. More specifically, this is an Indian alcoholic preparation that is brewed locally in the villages of Jaisalmer. The drink, I learned from the incredibly aware bartender at Suryagarh Hotel, contains 21 indigenous spices, the recipe to which is closely guarded by the commoners of the city. Said to have been passed down from the ages of the Maharajas, the Kesar Kasturi is comparatively stronger than a good ol’ whiskey. Ideally, you’re supposed to consume it like a wine and because it’s a winter drink, it’s the perfect time to enjoy it! I mean, who needs rum when you can warm up to this stuff?!
    5. Discover The Legendary Silk Route
From the 16th to the 18th century Jaisalmer was well established on the Silk Route as tradesmen favoured a southern route through India and Pakistan over the treacherous Pamir of Central Asia. Groups of traders from Kabul and Arabia would pass along this ancient spice route with their colourfully decorated caravans laden with silver, ivory, dried fruit, and other treasures, heading towards the Indian hinterland. And so the city prospered, a city of caravanserais in which the merchants took shelter as they came to trade or barter their exotic goods. On one of my excursions, we re-imagined this trade route.
    6. Picnic In The Desert  Music to the ears this is. With a sense of unexplained familiarity.  #Suryagarh #TravelDiaries #GirlVentures #GirlOnFoot #RajasthaniFolk #Jaisalmer #TharDesert #Music #InTheMiddleOfNowhere #DesertLand #DesertExploration

Back when I went, it was still pretty hot in the day to have a desert lunch. But, the whole surrounding—an oasis, Rajasthani folk songs and a calming breeze took all of the heat away. If you go during this weather, a lunch in the middle of the desert will be perfect. Picture this: You’re sitting in the middle of the desert, near an oasis with nothing but the sound of music and the rustling of leaves from the silent wind, while you indulge in a traditional Rajasthani thaal. It really doesn’t get any better than that.
    7. Hang Out With The Villagers  There's a beauty to Rajasthani Folk that is absolutely incomparable. I knew I loved it before. I didn't know I could relate to it on an unexplainable level.  #RajasthaniFolk #Music #Locals #Indigenous #Arts #Suryagarh #Culture #Beauty #Jaisalmer #TravelDiaries #DiscoverIndia #Travel #India

On one of the days, we decided to drive down to a nearby village where we met and hung out with the villagers. What’s interesting to note here is that the women of the villages have separate accommodations where they vibe their time. The children are free to run around and get themselves accustomed to the new faces that come from the city. In one of the village huts, the heads of the village—a group of elderly men—arranged for a spread of the best food and drinks for us to enjoy. These settlements don’t even have a ceiling fan on their roofs; but it’s so overwhelming to see the way their lives are so enriching.
    8. Go-Camel In The Desert
You can’t be in the middle of the dessert and NOT do a camel ride; you simply can’t. Yes, camels stink of poo. You’ll even see a bunch of flies sitting and nesting on their flesh. But, there is absolutely nothing better than riding into the desert on a frigging camel. You get to see the lands from an all-new high.
    9. Pay Homage To The Sati Cremation Sites  © Suryagarh
There used to be a time when, if a man died, his wife was supposed to be burnt to death on her husband’s pyre. That ritual was widely prevalent all across India until the time when the likes of freedom fighters and intellectual thinkers challenged this practice. But, when you travel to Jaisalmer, into the Thar Desert, you will come across Sati cremation sites—places where effigies were built as a mark of memory to these women. They still stand tall and strong and give you a chill running down your spine; to know that this actually happened, outside of the textbooks you read is a whole other feeling.
    10. Dine Under The Night Sky  You can be the most un-romantic person; you can be the most high maintenance guy. But, one night out in the middle of the Thar, under the starlit sky, is all you need to feel like you have literally experienced everything worth experiencing in this life. The folk dancers and singers will keep you entertained for the entire night, for as long as you can go on. I tried a whole new variation of Tequila shots, too; courtesy, our kind hotel manager who showed us a whole new way to party. Add to this a group of fun people and a bunch of drinking games and there’s never a dull moment in your life, ever again. That could be a way to bring in the New Year and trust me, it beats every damned thing else!

Marco Materazzi is not letting Zidane forget about that epic head butt in the 2006 World Cup final which cost France the championship, even 10 years after the fated event.
This is what the former Italian player posted on Instagram on his team’s win 10 years back.

Zidane’s stellar career ended on a sour note after the 2006 World Cup. And, Matterazzi has not helped matters too by reminding the Real Madrid coach about the infamous incident time and again.
Revisit the moment when Zidane handed over the WC to a blabbering Materazzi here:

The year 2016 has been a mix of ups and downs for the Indian cricket team. The sub-continent giants began the year with a promise of retaining their lost glory in the shortest format, and ended it with a young and charismatic captain inspiring his side to dominate the longest version of the game.
On one hand where the MS Dhoni-led brigade failed to live up to the billing in the ICC World T20 tournament, his counterpart Virat Kohli stunned the opposition with his willow and leadership skills to ensure his team ended the year as the world's no. 1 side in Test cricket.
With the New Year looming, we take a look at India's top five moments in cricket this year:
T20 series triumph Down Under © Twitter
Team India embarked on a challenging journey to Australia for a five-match ODI series and three-match T20I series in January. Despite some blistering performances from the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the Indian team lost the series 4-1 amid some major bowling troubles.
Their consolation win in the last ODI of the series changed the fortunes for the visitors who came out guns blazing in the T20 series. With Kohli leading from the front, the Men in Blue dominated the proceedings and avenged their ODI series loss with a 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series.
The T20 series gave India some of the biggest assets, including Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, in limited-overs cricket. Their triumph also set the tone for the ICC World T20 tournament that was hosted in India for the very first time.
Asia Cup T20 win © Twitter
Historically an ODI tournament, the Asia Cup underwent a change of format as the first ever T20I tournament. The Indian team began the tournament with a comfortable win over hosts Bangladesh and then overcame a stern test against arch-rivals Pakistan.
After taking out Pakistan for a mere 83 runs, India found themselves in a spot of bother with comeback seamer Mohammad Amir wreaking havoc on Dhoni's men. But, Virat Kohli weathered the Amir storm with his gritty knock of 49 runs and guided his side to a five-wicket win.
Following a scare against Pakistan, the Dhoni brigade recorded comfortable wins against Sri Lanka and UAE before setting up the summit clash against Bangladesh. The rain-curtailed tie saw the hosts scoring 120 runs in 15 overs which was eventually chased down by the Indian side with eight wickets to spare.
Winning back Test mace from Pakistan © Twitter
Virat Kohli-led Indian team climbed to the no. 1 spot in Test rankings following their 2-0 series win against West Indies in August. However, the joy of Indian fans was short-lived with arch-rivals Pakistan shooting them to the top after their 2-2 draw against England in the same month.
But, the Kohli brigade came back strong in the Test series against New Zealand to reclaim the ICC Test Championship mace in October. After taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, India were guaranteed the no. 1 spot but since the rankings are updated only at the end of a series, Kohli was presented the Test mace after the conclusion of the third Test - also won by the home side to complete a 3-0 rout of the Kiwis.
Kohli became only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni and the 10th overall to receive the mace.
    Kiwis shot down © Twitter
New Zealand's tour of India was the beginning of a gruelling home season for the Indian team. The Virat Kohli-led side locked horns with the Kiwis in three Tests and five ODIs spanning over a month.
Cheteshwar Pujara (373 runs), Ajinkya Rahane (347 runs) and Kohli (309 runs) were the top three run-scorers in the three-match Test series that was comfortably won by India 3-0. In the bowling department, Ravichandran Ashwin reigned supreme to emerge as the leading wicket-taker in the series with a staggering 27 wickets in three games.
The ODI series saw a better performance from the visitors who continued to challenge the hosts and tied the series 2-2 with just one game left to play. The fifth and final ODI saw India posting a competitive total of 269 runs, which eventually proved a tad too much to achieve for the New Zealanders who were blown away by Amit Mishra's magical spell of 5-18.
Record-breaking series win against England © BCCL
High on confidence with Test and ODI series win against the Kiwis, India found their next opponent in England who were the last team to win a Test series on Indian soil back in 2012. But after a draw in the first Test, the visiting Englishmen lost four matches on the trot to suffer a 0-4 whitewash.
Virat Kohli was once again the driving force with 655 runs, including two hundreds and two fifties, at an average of 109.16 in five matches. His knock of 235 in the first innings of the fourth Test made him the first Indian captain to record three double hundreds in a calendar year.
The fifth and final Test saw budding talent Karun Nair breaking away from the shadows of India's proven stars. The right-hander became the second Indian player to score a triple ton in Test cricket. His inbeaten knock of 303 in Chennai was the cornerstone of India's highest-ever Test score of 759/7.
Ravichandran Ashwin (28 wickets) and Ravindra Jadeja (26 wickets) once again dominated the proceedings with the ball. The two spinners were responsible for 54 wickets in what turned out to be a record-breaking series for India.

I’ve been on a gift-giving spree since the start of this month. What can I say? December brings out the Santa Claus within me. And since I have a lot of men in my life (ain’t no surprise there, really), I got quite a bit of dope on what gifts they really want for Christmas. And interestingly enough, men are pretty good at knowing what to ask for.
If You’ve Known Him For 3 Months Or Less…  You barely know him, really. Just that you seemed to get along perfectly well since the start and you see him and you being great friends for a long time… but, let’s just focus on the now.
    Alcohol Selections
Choose from the best selections of wines or whiskeys to present to your new friend this Christmas. Here’s a few options I really liked.
    © Fratelli Vineyards
© Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve
    © Jameson
    Dessert Selections
Every guy is a dessert guy; even the one who’s chosen the gym over the German bakery near your house. It’s. As. Simple. As. That. Bruh!

    © Papabubble
If You’ve Known Him For 3 to 6 Months…  You have a deeper understanding and a potentially lifelong friendship brewing. Also, you know each other pretty well enough to know what pisses the other one off and what doesn’t.
    Accessories
I’m talking tie pins and cuff links and maybe a male bracelet to commemorate your friendship, if that’s the kind of cheesy thing you’re into.

    Books & Stationary
This one is usually the safest one for any guy out there. Men have a penchant for hoarding stuff that looks good—yep, it works almost the same way they treat women—and so, by default, they have a thing for swanky stationary.

If You’ve Known Him From 6 Months to 1 Year  You’re in each other’s comfort zones now. You don’t just know what pisses each other off; you know exactly HOW to get on one another’s nerves because, why the hell not?!

If You’ve Known Him More Than A Year  You’re officially living out of each other’s houses, or bean bags, or bachelor pads, or whatever it is that you live in. You know the *** you’ve had—both bad and good—you know about the girl he’s trying to date and he knows about the nasty way your ex just dumped you. You’re frigging bros! You’re so thick you almost share boxers… Let’s just thank God you don’t.

The festive season is here and party invitations are already lined up, not just for Christmas but New Years as well. So, if you are thinking of throwing a party, then you definitely must have this question in mind- How do I make my Party stand out without emptying my pockets? So, here is a list of things to keep in mind if you want to throw a BYOB party.
    1. State it clearly- While inviting your guests, make it absolutely clear that you are not the booze/beverage provider, they are! Now how do you do this politely?  Just tell them everybody is bringing their own booze and so they are welcome to bring whatever they’d like to drink or share with people. Also, it’s a BYOB, doesn’t mean you need to be a cheapskate. Get at least some alcohol, maybe a bottle of wine and some beers.
    © Instagram
    2. Get bar essentials and be cocktail ready- Since you are not providing the booze, be considerate enough to provide the basic stuff. What falls under this basic stuff? Everything! From Coke to lemons, to ice to even salt! Also, set out different glasses for different varieties of alcohol. I’m sure your guests won’t appreciate drinking whiskey in a wine glass.
    3. Be smart with your food options- Everyone comes to a party expecting to have some good food and a good time. That is why the food should be marvelous yet not too heavy on your pocket. Get bulk packets of snacks like chips and nachos and add an extra touch by buying a large jar of salsa or pesto as a dipping option. Don’t try to think too much out of the box and simply order dinner from your favorite restaurant (not the expensive one but the one where you regularly eat at because it’s not just yum but affordable) and be a happy host who is not slogging away in the kitchen but is present in every picture.
    © Thinkstock
    4. The ice-box is the key- Let’s be honest, nobody likes warm beer. Be a good host and get an ice-box for the booze. If you do not have one, borrow one from any of your friends and if you do have one, take a look at its condition before the party.
    © Shutterstock
    5. Don’t go overboard- We know you feel the need to over-compensate because you are not the one providing booze but don’t let it reflect by going overboard with the food and arrangements. Throwing a party is a huge task in itself, and all the effort will be a total waste if you didn’t get to enjoy it yourself. So, take it easy and just look after some basic arrangements and you’re good to go. Do not overdo it , Do not stress and most importantly, have fun!
    © Instagram
    6. Have a backup plan- We’ve all been to those BYOB parties where the BYOB part wasn’t so successful. So, just in case there isn’t enough alcohol, keep some backup options in mind- a nearby store that you can quickly visit or an emergency number that is a sure shot way of getting alcohol.
Now that you have all the information you’ll ever need on throwing the perfect BYOB party, go ahead, be an adultier adult!

There’s only one thing that mattered in 2016 – Priyanka Chopra. 2016 shall always be remembered as the year of Priyanka Chopra. And there’s zero exaggeration in that statement. Because, this.
    1. If bagging a lead role in an American crime drama TV series wasn’t enough, Priyanka Chopra became the first Indian to win the People’s Choice Award for her performance on the show.

    5. Not even kidding. After working with her, ‘The Rock’ realized what Hollywood had been missing all these years.
She's one of the biggest stars in the world. Insanely talented, relentlessly smokin' and extremely dangerous - perfect for #BAYWATCH. 7. She turned into a voice-over artist for ‘The Jungle Book’ and proved she can slay just with her voice too.

For all you ‘throwing-waste-on-the-street’ peeps, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has some serious news. Considering that garbage is a serious pollutant in our country, the NGT has announced a fine of Rs. 10,000 for people littering in public places.
What’s more, the panel also said that the authorities are under “statutory” obligation to make sure that the waste is “collected, transported and disposed” of in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
BREAKING: Now Pay Rs 10,000 As Fine For Throwing Waste In Public Places: NGT pic.twitter.com/P9SDY7wQ14
    — Sir Ravindra Jadeja (@SirJadeja) December 19, 2016 A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar said, “Any such body, person, hotels, residents, slaughter houses, vegetable markets, etc. which does not comply with the directions or throw their waste over any drain or public place shall be liable to pay environmental compensation at the rate of Rs. 10, 000 per default.”
    © Flickr Miran Rijavec
Just in case you are wondering how much is too much in terms of throwing waste, it was noted by the Tribunal that Delhi generates 9,600 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, so just imagine the state of the entire nation.
“It should be kept in mind that as per polluter pays principle, each person would be liable to pay for causing pollution, if the waste is generated. It is the duty of a citizen to ensure that said waste is handled properly and not to cause any pollution or cause inconvenience to other persons. The entire burden cannot be shifted on the state and authorities,” the bench added.

What do you expect when you’re heading for a 3-day music festival in the middle of the Thar Desert? Lots of pulsating music and lots of sand, what else? Then why would you take a Bluetooth speaker to such an event? I have no clue. Am I glad I took it? Abso-fuckin-lutely. Here’s the rundown:
    © MensXP
I didn’t think there would be too many opportunities to use the speaker, but it turned out I was wrong. By the end of day 2, I was so sick and tired of bass that I needed some soft, soothing music. This is when the Zoook was introduced to my friends. Even though we were in the middle of the desert, the 6Wx2 speakers and 40 mm driver unit were loud enough to entertain the six of us.
    © MensXP
Connecting to the speaker via Bluetooth was a breeze. It comes with Bluetooth 4.1, which is awesome. It also has an AUX audio in port if you’re one of those people who refuse to use Bluetooth technology, even though we’re in 2016. When friends get together, everyone wants to play their own music, right?
    © MensXP
Luckily, connecting and disconnecting our phones from this speaker wasn’t hard at all. They say you can transmit from as much as 10m away. I don’t think I was 10m away from the speaker at any point, but I believe it would have worked even if I did.
What’s the best way to test if a speaker is shock resistant? You drop it by mistake, of course. What about when you’re reviewing a speaker? You drop it multiple times! But, the sound didn’t even distort each time the speaker hit the ground. There was no visible damage on the speaker either. Impressive stuff from a company I have never heard of before.
    © MensXP
I didn’t get a chance to test the water resistance capabilities of the speaker but what I did test was the dust resistance, I was in the middle of the desert remember? Even after keeping it in the sand for a while it still looks as good as new. While there’s no way for me to tell if dust made its way inside or not, what I can say is, if dust has entered the speaker, it hasn’t influenced its working in any way. IP65 (water and dust resistant) rating? Well deserved indeed.
It measures 173 x 73 x 49 mm. In the hand, the speaker feels like a rock. That’s perhaps because it weighs 425 g. I’m pretty sure I could knock someone out with it if I tried. But don’t worry, it looks real cool too. It reminds me a lot of Tron, the film. The hanging strap proved to be quite useful too. You don’t need me to tell you why.
    © MensXP
Now let’s talk about the battery life. It comes with a 2,000-mAh battery, which takes around 3-4 hours to charge and promises 6-8 hours of operating time after. I charged it once in the morning after we arrived at the festival. I must have used it for at least four hours over the next two and a half days. Didn’t need to charge it again. The sound quality didn’t reduce in quality either. When I don’t have to charge a portable device regularly, I’m happy.
    © MensXP
Personally, I don’t think I would ever need a portable speaker but if you’re the kind of person who likes to have one in his/her backpack at all times, go for the Zoook. It doesn’t even cost INR 3,000. Also, Christmas is right around the corner.

Chinese company ‘Blu’ are a smartphone manufacturers that uses preinstalled apps to spy on their customers. No doubt, this sounds very disconcerting but not really shocking news is it? It utilises a program called ‘Adups’ which is pre-installed on many of Blu smartphones and it is being used to spy on many of its customers. Blu’s spying methods have inspired other Android device manufacturers to do the same and it won’t stop anytime soon.
    © Blu
The term ‘mobile phone security’ is thrown around a lot these days and intelligence communities exploit, breach and bug our smartphones endlessly so that they can track and spy on normal citizens whenever they please. Not only does it invade our privacy but also puts our personal information at risk.
    © BCCL
    © BCCL
Kryptowire, an internet security outfit shed light on how Adups uses updates for mobile devices to install firmware that facilitates spying. The firmware can snoop in areas where it shouldn’t be present without a user ever knowing that he/she is being spied on. This information is collected by Adups and they can do whatever they please with the data.
Another digital security firm, Trustlook, dug even deeper to find out what other devices use ‘Adups’ on their phones and the result was overwhelming. Trustlook believes that over 700 million Android smartphones have the same Adups firmware and it puts information like text messages, device information, and call histories at risk. All of this information is being collected by Adups without the owners' consent or knowledge. Adups is used by many smaller manufacturers who only release phones in Asian markets and other minor markets; however, the list also includes a major manufacturer – Lenovo!
Adups nefarious policies and software that helps them collect information has been one of the reasons why some companies have started to take action. In light of these insane and sinister events, other small manufacturers need to do the same.

Who does the ISIS hate most? The US? The Russians? Turns out this time it’s a 23-year-old Kurdish woman. The ISIS has offered a reward of $1 million for assassinating Joanna Palani, Kurdish woman who took up arms against the militant group in Syria and Iraq.
    © The Independent
In a culture where women are sold as *** slaves and are not accorded even basic human rights, looks like Joanna’s bold move didn’t go down well with the extremists. Angered at a woman standing up to them, the group has offered the reward to anyone who will kill her.
    © Twitter
Joanna’s family was granted asylum in Denmark when she was young, and she credited her ‘European values’ as inspiration behind her fight. She wrote on Facebook that she was inspired “to fight for women’s rights, for democracy - for the European values I learned as a Danish girl.” The girl left her graduation in politics midway to join the fight against ISIS.

Currently, she is on trial in Copenhagen for having left the country despite a 12-month travel ban implemented in June 2015, and if found guilty, she could face 2 years in prison. “How can I pose a threat to Denmark and other countries by being a soldier in an official army that Denmark trains and supports directly in the fight against [Isis]?” she posted on Facebook.

You heard that right! Mark Zuckerbeg has installed a personal assistant in his home, which is voiced by Morgan Freeman himself. Well, the voice of God can now be heard in the home of one of the richest men in the world and who better to voice the AI than Morgan Freeman?
As the proliferation of voice controlled home assistants like Amazon Echo and Google Home continue, we will soon be commanding robots to complete mundane chores and tasks much like in the 60s TV show, The Jetsons and numerous sci-fi films.

Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, started a project in early 2016 that focused on building actual AI. He said he was inspired by the popular Iron Man movies where Tony Stark had an AI assistant called Jarvis who helped him out with all sorts of tasks and information.

He had the Facebook community post on his timeline with recommendations as to who would fit the bill to voice the AI. Morgan ‘God’ Freeman was the most popular and overwhelming choice and Mark Zuckerbed has abided with the request. It was not revealed whether Freeman was paid for his time and his contribution.
Most of the commands that the AI recognises are text based which means not all commands will be met with a reply from Morgan Freeman’s voice. Zuckerbeg can use Facebook Messenger to turn his lights on and off, play music and even open his front gate.
    The future is here, people.

2016 has been a pretty mixed bag as far as music is concerned. While some songs were major hits and did pretty well, a large chunk of music doing the rounds consisted of old songs that were just rehashed. Here are some of the main numbers that were recycled and made a few people dance, and also made many people cringe:
    1. Kargayi Chull This is one song that can be placed on repeat, and no matter if you are drunk or sober, you’d still want to shake a leg to this tune. The new version was rehashed by Badshah, the same rapper behind the original score. Honestly, we don’t really mind the new version.
    2. Kala Chashma Another Badshah song that ruled the charts this year. Though it was a risky choice since the original song is crazy, but he did a good job with this one. Also, Katrina’s insane body wins the cake.
    3. High Heels The Honey Singh-Jaz Dhami number got a twist this year when Arjun Kapoor was dancing to it wearing high heels! The new version was a hit at weddings though.
    4. Gal Bangayi The original version has been a wedding classic and most receptions are incomplete without the swanky Sukhbir number. However, the new version of this has been dampened with stupid lyrics, and bad music.
    5. Haseeno Ka Deewana The classic Amitabh Bachchan tune now has Urvashi Rautela gyrating to it. If the makers were running out of item numbers, they should have shelled out some money and asked Pritam to make a better one for them.
    6. Ae Zindagi Galey Laga Le The original one strikes a beautiful chord with every heart and has stayed relevant over the years. The new version is sung by the ace singer Arijit, and his voice does inspire a lot of magic. Perhaps that is the only reason the song is listenable.
    7. Aj Jaane Ki Zidd Na Karo Some beautiful melodies should never be touched and this one is definitely on the list. The new version is a weird cocktail that has lyrics that try a little too hard and fast paced music. The video gets a thumbs up, no doubt, but the song is nothing great.
    8. Dil Ke Paas ‘Wajah Tum Ho’, the latest dud to join the movie brigade has rehashed many old songs and ruined them for our ears. Starting with ‘Dil Ke Paas’, the beautiful Kishore Kumar number has been redone in the voices of Arijit and Tulsi Kumar. Sorry, but this plagiarism is plain stupid.
    9. Dil Mein Chupa Lunga Another one from the same movie that the makers ran out of funds for composing new songs, so decided to ruin the golden ones as well. This might be a good listen for a long drive, but with the original one being so sensuous, why would you need this?
    10. Maahi Ve The original song was a lovely number sung by Richa Sharma and Malaika did full justice to it with her amazing dancing. The new one has Neha Kakkar deteriorating the quality for us and Zarine Khan hurting the eyes as you look at her.
    11. Humma Humma The latest in the revamped list is the famous A.R Rahman number. Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur are trying a little too hard in this new version. There is obviously a rap by Badshah, since he is a mandate in songs these days, and the music is quirky. This version is danceable but obviously doesn’t beat the old one.
Let’s hope the New Year also brings some new and decent music. One can only hope!

That time of the year is here again. In otherwise what’s been a total havoc of a year, 2016 has only taught me this one life lesson.
    © Tumblr
I made a total of 10 New Year resolutions last December, and failed 20 even before I hit February. This year, I’m going to do things a little differently. Realistically speaking, this list seems to be the only way I can ever successfully stick to my New Year Resolutions.
    1. Snoozing the alarm every morning, skipping gym by telling myself I’m still 500 grams away from being obese and STILL getting late for work. Sticking to this healthy routine every fucking day of the year.

    2. Judging people for doing very, very normal things that I’m guilty of doing myself.

    3. Being the biggest disappointment in my parents’ life.
    © ClassicalArtMemes
    4. Cribbing about my sucky social life. Then, cancelling out on every plan my friends make and watching back-to-back reruns of ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’ at home instead.

    5. Overthinking every damn inconsequential thing in life and still making the worst, most uninformed decision ever.

    6. Spending the whole year scrolling through memes. Because meme is life. Memes are what will save humanity one day.

    7. Dating the absolute worst kind of people and not learning from it.

    8. Being the biggest askhole there exists.
    © UrbanDictionary
    9. Watching ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ every weekend without fail.

    10. Laughing at every inappropriate situation in life.

    11. Taking the sole responsibility of making sure the jinx on that Goa trip that never happens still continues.

    12. Giving up smoking to live a healthy life. Until, I see someone smoking.

    13. Ignoring every voice in my head that inspires me into doing anything remotely productive that might just give my life meaning.

    14. Not shying away from a fourth, okay fifth, serving of that Big Chill dessert because what’s 1000 calories in front of salvation.

    15. Complaining about being single but always choosing pizza over girls.

    16. Giving in to that itch to shut people down on social media even when they’re making a perfectly valid point because they don’t know the difference between you’re and your.

    17. Mentally saying “that’s what she said” to anything anyone says.

    18. Continuing to crack cringeworthy jokes only you find funny till you’re left alone on your death bed.

    19. Deciding to lay off alcohol at every party and waking up to find videos of yourself dancing to ‘tamanchey pe disco’ with complete strangers.

    20. Saving money for exactly 1 week and then binge-shopping the next day because if I’m gonna beg in the last week, I might as well do it in that Zara jacket.

    21. Unlocking a new level of denial by telling yourself 25 is the new 20.

Andre Russell is one of the most destructive T20 batsmen, especially considering how his red hot form in the T20 world cup led West Indies to the World Cup title win earlier this year. And now, inspired by Gayle’s Golden bat, he’s creating a tremendous buzz in the Big Bash League.
This pink and black colored bat used by Andre Russell in the game against Sydney Sixers is one of the latest in a series of innovations after the mongoose bats. Take a look at the unique bat here:
    Here comes Dre Russ!

And have a look at that bat!! #BBL06 pic.twitter.com/iFvYysrfsD
    — KFC Big Bash League (@BBL) December 20, 2016 A similar bat has earlier been used in the English County T20 cricket by Ashar Zaidi for Essex but it was immediately banned because it had an adverse impact on the ball. Similar concerns were raised by Haddin who said that batting for longer periods of time with a black bat could make the ball difficult to spot.
“With that black bat, the ball, if you have a close look at it, it has four black marks on it. So if he had batted for longer time, it may have proven hard to see,” Haddin told the commentators.
    © Twitter
But this isn’t the first time that Russell has use a colored bat in a T20 league. He had earlier played with a pink bat in CPL earlier this year too but with little or no success. Cricket Australia has however confirmed that the use of any kind of coloured bat is subject to their approval but not entirely illegal.
"A player can use a coloured bat subject to CA approval. The bat may be the same colour as the Club’s primary colour, or black. CA retains the right to withdraw approval in its absolute discretion. The umpires can also request a player change the bat if they believe it affects the integrity of the match."
Colored or not, the true power of a bat is in the hands of the one wielding it wouldn’t you say?

From Hollywood icons to Punk bands of  ‘70s, and to the Gen-Z style influencers of today, there has been one piece of outfit which has been a constant insignia of style—a classic leather jacket. It is a key piece in every stylish man’s wardrobe. And why not? When you are looking for that everlasting piece of outerwear which can transition from work to party wear easily, a leather jacket just fits the bill. Though they might come across as long lasting, a good leather jacket needs constant care.  Here are 5 easy tips to ensure that they last longer.
    1. Keep It Away From Heat And Do Not Expose To Sunlight Direct exposure to sunlight is harmful for any leather product. It not only fades the leather but also absorbs the moisture and the natural oils from it (don’t forget leather is a skin), thus leading to the development of cracks. We also suggest that you should keep your leather jackets away from any kind of source that releases heat.
    © Pinterest
    2. Never Store A Leather Jacket In A Plastic Bag Leather jackets last long once they are allowed to dry in open air. Most of the times to protect the jackets we wrap them up in plastic, that’s a wrong practice as that leads to moisture which is not good for the leather. Allow your leather jackets to breathe.
    © Pinterest
    3. Polish Your Leather Jackets Yes, just like your shoes, you can polish your leather jackets too. But do not use a regular shoe polish. There are specific leather polishes available for leather jackets, use them occasionally just to maintain the shine.
    © Pinterest
    4. Apply Conditioner Conditioners can be use useful when it comes to protecting a leather jacket. Rubbing a bit of conditioner can help retain the oil preventing leather from drying and developing cracks.
    © Amazon
    5. As A General Cleaning Practice Use A Damp Cloth During the winter season leather tends to develop salt deposits, and you can easily wipe them off using a hot damp piece of cloth. Let the leather jacket dry on its own. You can rub a mild conditioner after that.

This shaadi season is all about embracing the desi dude in you. We suggest ditch those tuxedos and experiment with super cool dhoti drapes which will help you elevate your style quotient of ethnic perfection. Weddings call for making bold fashion statements and nothing replaces an old-school dhoti  (yes, they are a rage on the runway)  paired with a tailored tuxedo a classic bandhgala or even a short sherwani. Sounds intimidating? You can take inspiration from wedding fashion veterans such as Tarun Tahiliani and Anju Modi who have playfully incorporated dhotis as a part of their oeuvre.
Here are some straight of the runway cues for you to take inspiration from.

People are driving for miles to the gym only to ‘walk’ on a treadmill. Dudes want to lose weight to fit in a pair of skinny jeans. Carbohydrates are being avoided as if they will bring about a zombie apocalypse. Fat people are running marathons and avoiding egg yolks. All of this is sad. Our generation’s outlook towards fitness is sad.
Your Parents Never Went On A Diet, & Nor Did Your Grandparents. They Are Fitter Than You Are And Chances Are That They Will Outlive You. Look at your parents and even your grandparents for that matter. They are decades elder to you but still more to immune seasonal diseases than you are. They are just generally, unlike adults of our generation, fit. They eat everything from sweets to rotis, yes the dreaded gluten. They have been doing it for decades and they hardly have issues with weight gain and general illnesses. The reason for this is that their level of physical activity in the younger days was way more than our sedentary lifestyles today. You get the drift? Move more and sit less. Falling in for fad diets is a happening thing, just like wearing a fitband and not even taking ten steps.
Trading In Lifting Weights For Running Distances. Exactly Where Our Generation Went Wrong! © Thinkstock
The human body is built to sprint, walk and carry heavy weights. Our ancestors did it. It’s in our genes and you just can’t manipulate your genetic make-up. We weren’t supposed to run. We either sprinted to catch prey or ‘walked’, not ran unending distances, to settle colonies, except for a few tribes who were known for distance running.  But then again, they ran for a purpose and not for weight loss. Marathons and running in general has always been a sport since ages, not a weight loss tool. Our generation has made it one. Misguided fat people are running endlessly, only to become a skinny fatter, not fitter version of themselves. Lifting weights is being neglected and it’s being replaced with running. It’s dangerous and an army of weak, skinny fat individuals will soon assemble.
Assuming Self Responsibility Has Gone For A Toss © Thinkstock
The first step towards ‘not being fat’ is to acknowledge that you have made mistakes- dietary and lifestyle. Thanks to the internet, this has gone for a toss. Accepting your body is good but if you are heading in to diabetes, that’s not body love. People who want to help fat people out are being shamed instead.  If you are fat and sick of it, do something. You have to start from somewhere and sharing ‘body love memes’ doesn’t count as a start.
A Severe Disregard For Nutrition And Worsening Dietary Choices © Thinkstock
Corporation will continue making junk food but what the hell, they are not shoving it down your throat; you are. The slaves to junk food have made themselves that. Home cooked food is neglect for preservative added packaged food and selling stupid detox water is a multi-million dollar business now.  It’s simple, there’s intentional disregard for nutrition which reflects in the younger populace of our generation. Aren’t we wise enough to make sensible dietary choices? Ask yourself this question.

We all prayed and waited for a decent action movie this decade. With a glut of cookie cutter films like the latest Die Hard movies (which were absolute crap, BTW), audiences around the world were waiting with baited breath for a balls to the wall, all ass-kicking action fest. That prayer was answered in the form of John Wick in 2014. It was a true return to form for Keanu Reeves as he shot, battered, sliced and quartered his way through the Russian mafia in an action film that truly redefined the genre.

Seeing that the first film was an incredible success, the studio executives decided to bring back the hit-man with a grudge in John Wick 2 and we can’t thank them enough. The new trailer for the film is out and it looks freaking glorious! There’s tons of shooting, driving and general mayhem causing antics that John Wick 2 looks like the sleeper hit of 2017.

Year 2016 has been quiet challenging for the Indian army. The enemies on the eastern and western borders have taken to asymmetrical and hybrid warfare, resulting in one of the bloodiest years for the Indian armed forces. This change in strategy from those looking to bleed India by a thousand cuts has demanded an offensive defense policy being spearheaded by NSA Ajit Doval. And so, the selection of the next Indian army chief is a reflection of the continuation of the same strategy.

Bipin Singh Rawat, who was chosen as the next Indian army chief superseding two senior officers, is one of the most accomplished commanders; battle-hardened to tackle the twin threat of cross border terrorism and LoC skirmishes. That he has been the operational brains behind some of the most recent Indian strikes on enemy territory shows that he was indeed the correct choice for India’s army chief.
Rawat comes from a background of on-field operations. Back in June 2015, he was given the task of avenging the death of 18 Indian soldiers who were ambushed by the Naga Rebels in Manipur. The rebels, who crossed over to Myanmar, didn’t know what hit them when an immediate hot pursuit was carried out by the Indian army inside the rebels’ territory across the border. One of the things which stood out in those strikes was the intelligence preparedness and Rawat was credited for a clean operation by the Para Commandos.

General Rawat is from a military background and his father was a lieutenant general in the Indian army too. He joined the Indian army in December 1978 and was awarded the sword of honor after graduating from the Indian Military Academy the same year. Like his predecessor Dalbir Singh, Rawat too belongs to Gorkha Rifles. He was recently appointed as the vice-chief of army.
What tipped the scales in favor of Gen. Rawat was his familiarity within the government of the day and operational closeness with the Defence Ministry. Just three weeks after he took over as the Vice-Chief, the Indian army carried out the surgical strikes against Pakistan sponsored terrorist havens across the LoC. The Director General Of Military Operations reports to the vice-chief and in that sense it made Gen. Rawat a key figure in decision-making during that time.

Like many top commanders in the Indian army, Bipin Rawat has had international experience of heading the Indian banner in a UN Peacekeeping operation in Congo in 2008. During his time in Congo, the Indian brigade changed its approach from that of a velvet glove to an iron fist. The same can be expected during his tenure as the Indian Army Chief because whatever assignments he has taken over the past few decades of his service, the General has had a no-nonsense approach to unprovoked aggression.

‘Ok Jaanu’, Shaad Ali’s remake of the South Indian film ‘OK Kanmani’ that had every critic raving about it, is about two young lovers who decide to live in, knowing that they will soon part ways and never meet again. The remake stars Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur in the main lead.
‘Ok Jaanu’ has left people hating on Badshah for revisiting the 90s classic ‘Humma Humma’ and adding his nonsensical rap to it.
But, the makers just released the video of the title track and it is definitely compensating for all the ‘Humma Humma’ damage. Composed by A.R. Rahman and penned by Gulzar, the song is a Hindi version of Mental Manadhil from ‘Ok Kanmani’. Now of course, if you love the original, this one might disappoint but objectively speaking, the ‘Ok Jaanu’ title track does deserve a big thumbs up. Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Kapoor might have lacked chemistry in ‘Humma Humma’ but here, the two seem to be having the best time of their lives on a bike ride across the city. If nothing else, this song will give you dating goals!
Just in case you haven’t heard the original one, here it is!
