Back in 2008, for the first time in 80 years, the Indian Hockey Team failed to qualify for the Olympics. That was a big blow to hockey in India which prides itself of a rich history of the sport pioneered by some of the greatest names in the game including Dhyaan Chand, Balbir Singh, Dhanraj Pillay and others. It was the weakest moment of Indian Hockey in decades and many though that it would be almost impossible for the team to make a comeback considering the intensity with which the game was being played at the time by international teams like Australia, Germany and Netherland.

Snap back to the Junior Hockey World Cup title win by the Indian team and suddenly the two contrasting periods show how much work has gone into restructuring the game which was down in the doldrums just a few years back.
Since 2008, the senior national team has grabbed two silver medals in the commonwealth games (2010, 2014)and a bronze and a gold in the Asian Games(2010, 2014). Apart from these quadrennial events, the team has done well to improve and finish second in the Asia Cup in 2013, being the runners up in the Champions Trophy in 2016 and winning the Asian champions trophy in 2016. And all of this does not include the spirited hockey Indian team played at the Rio Olympics.
    © BCCL
And so, when Harendra Singh’s team took the field against Belgium looking to end a 15-year-old World Cup drought, all eyes turned to men in blue and whether they would be able to match up to intensity of the European team. The quality of raw talent on display was impressive but it’s not luck that has brought this success to the young team. Assembled in 2014, the team has stuck together through thick and thin under Harendra’s guidance and impressed everyone in different conditions. It was the same team which won the Junior Asia Cup last year and another build up tournament in Spain before clinching the World Cup at home.
It’s a positive sign for Indian Hockey that the new generation of players have the emotional capacity and on-field intensity matching the international standards. It augurs well for the senior team too because Roelant Oltsman will now have a bucket full of new players to inject into the team which needs fresh legs all the time. Interesting times ahead for Indian hockey fans and who knows in four years time we might even challenge top teams for a medal in Olympics!

Young talent Satvik Balram is a YouTube artist who gives popular Bollywood songs his own touch and this time, he’s chosen two of the best songs of Ranbir Kapoor’s career – ‘Channa Mereya’ from ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and ‘Kabira’ from ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’. Oh, and there’s a bit of ‘O Sanam’ too that merges beautifully with the rest of the composition.

Boris Franz Becker. Three words that can make even the most uninformed person on this planet sit up in respect and reverence. Three words that make up the name of a man who singlehandedly changed how the game of tennis was played. How do you match up to him? You simply don’t. And when you’re in his presence, you feel exonerated.
    © Akshay Bhalla Instagram
That was exactly what it was like last weekend at the PumaXBecker party that was hosted by fashion label Bhane, in honour of the legend who was in India to launch the Puma Becker collection—inspired by the shoes that were made for Becker during the Wimbledon men’s championship at the age of 17. We had a golden moment with the legend and we got him to tell us about his connection to Puma, his playoffs with Andre Agassi, his relationship with his son and his first love—Tennis. And here are some of his best lines from our conversation…
On Tennis © Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images
“Tennis is both easy and difficult. When we choose to do what we love, sometimes it’s easy to pursue it; sometimes it’s difficult. But, that’s just life. Tennis is a spectacular sport, with a great history, tradition and legacy and remains relevant with the current generation.  The sport requires you to put in a lot of hard work, be mentally strong and disciplined. In fact, any sport in that matter requires immense discipline to succeed.  Commitment to the sport is what keeps me going. If it was not for tennis, I really don’t know what I’d do.”
On Puma © Daily Mail UK
“I had worn a pair of Puma mid-top tennis shoes when I won the Wimbledon at the age of 17! This was the first mid- top tennis shoe to ever be made which supported my ankles, as well as my playing style. This classic is made for the court but has since then also been replicated on the streets.
On Andre Agassi © France Sports TV
“I like the guy (Andre Agassi)! I think he has character and was always a great competitor. We had some close matches. He’s become an exceptional father now and he has put a lot of his resources and money into his community in Las Vegas.”
On His Son, Noah © Roba Images
“I’m a very supportive father and I will always have Noah’s back. He’s doing what he loves and I think that’s what matters the most. I completely respect his decision of getting into the music industry and becoming a DJ. I think it’s a great step for Noah because he is doing what he loves and the people—including me—love his music too!”

If you are a Pakistan cricket team fan, you aren’t quite sure what you are going to get. And sometimes, you get a feeling that the same is true for the Pakistan team as well because they are not sure what kind of a performance they are going to put in too.
The humdinger of a test match at Gabba is a case in point. After crumbling in the first innings for a mere 142 runs, the Pakistan team turned up like a team possessed in the fourth innings to score 450 while chasing a mammoth 490. What many are dubbing as the test match of the year, here’s how Twitter reacted to Pakistan’s resilient reply.
And so the excitement is over!! Brilliant test match from Australia and Pakistan, best team won but I am a big fan of this Pak team!?

    — Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) December 19, 2016 What a remarkable fight back by Pakistan. Gotta love test cricket #AUSvPAK
    — Gaurav Kapur (@gauravkapur) December 19, 2016 Pakistan, who lost nine wickets in the last session v NZ two weeks ago, fall 39 short chasing 490. What a mad, beautiful team. #AusvPak
    — Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) December 19, 2016 With two more tests to go in the series, you can be sure of one thing: If it’s Pakistan, it’s going to be interesting no matter what the format!

If you were fascinated by Arshad Warsi starrer ‘Jolly LLB’, then the second installment is definitely worth looking forward to, because the trailer looks great. After delivering blockbusters like ‘Rustom’ and ‘Airlift’, Bollywood’s Khiladi Akshay Kumar is all set to floor you guys with the courtroom drama ‘Jolly LLB 2’. However, his character slightly resembles the one he portrayed in the movie ‘Khatta Meetha’ – a goofy guy who never manages to do things right, turns into the righteous person who fights for justice.
    © Fox Star Studios
Jolly LLB, a satirical courtroom drama was a complete package of humour, tension, judicial corruption, monopolistic behaviour and brilliant actors like Saurabh Shukla, Boman Irani and Arshad Warsi were like cherry on top. With the first installment being a super hit, it’s only natural to have high expectations from the sequel, but with the talent house that Akshay Kumar is, we are sure the movie won’t disappoint you at all.
    © Fox Star Studios
In this movie, Akshay does full justice to the role and together with veteran actors like Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor, things only turn hilarious and tense at the same time, for the audience. The trailer doesn’t crack you up, but some parts are funny and dialogues are power-packed. Actress Huma Qureshi plays the female lead and the pairing is not disappointing at all. Check out the trailer and do watch it till the end, because the end note of the trailer is what will compel you to rethink almost everything you thought was “fair”. The movie will release on February 10, 2017.

A while ago, a film student from Amsterdam experienced what many people face every day. His iPhone was stolen while he was lunching and it led him to report the theft to the local authorities but nothing fruitful ever transpired.  The thief had already disposed of the SIM card and disconnected the phone from the Internet so that it could not be tracked.
The victim, Anthony Van der Meer, was curious as to who and what kind of people steal phones and where do they eventually end up. So, Van der Meer decided to have yet another phone of his swiped again; however, he was prepared this time.
He pre-installed some necessary spyware so that he could track and keep tabs on the stolen phone and the thief. This enabled him to keep a close eye on the thief and get to know him up close and personal.
    © Thinkstock
Van der Meer would be able to keep a tab on his phone as he installed the anti-theft app Cerberus. The app would enable him to track the phone’s location and even the contents of the phone. He could use the phone’s camera and microphone to listen in on conversations and surreptitiously spy on the thief. It took Van der Meer four days to get his phone nicked as he planted the phone in various locations and it was time for him to discover what was really going on with his stolen phone.

The film student secretly followed the thief for the next two weeks where he documented his each and every move. He was able to turn the footage he obtained into a documentary which was very thrilling, disturbing and informative.

2016 is almost gone and the only reason we’re still holding on to it tight is because December marks the release of the most awaited film of the year – ‘Dangal’.
Aamir Khan is portraying the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a wrestler who trains his daughters to represent the nation in the sport and its being touted as the ‘best film of the last decade’!

Just saw DANGAL...haven't seen a better film in a decade......speechless!!!!
    — Karan Johar (@karanjohar) October 9, 2016

Whoever has seen it already, thanks to the special screening Aamir Khan held for the film fraternity, has been all praises for it.

@aamir_ Dangal is by any standard the best film our film industry has made in the last decade and a half . Hats off to the cast n crew .
    — Javed Akhtar (@Javedakhtarjadu) October 11, 2016

The trailer gave the audiences goosebumps and the songs are already catching up with the masses. People are loving Aamir Khan’s new avatar and the treatment of the film. And suddenly, the makers drop this new version of the song ‘Dhaakad’. This one has Aamir Khan as a singer and rapper. He can be seen dancing wearing a hooded jacket and we really don’t know what to feel.
Going by the look and feel of the film, this one seems more like a promotional song and it will surely reap in more audiences in the theatres but what is it really required? What do you think of the Aamir Khan version of this song from Dangal?

What does it take to play (a sport like) basketball in this cricket-crazy country? Relentless passion? Unyielding love? Persistent dedication? Perhaps a bit of everything...? For Delhi-born businessman, Anand Ahuja, it is all this and much more. Besides being a hardcore basketball fan, Anand is also the owner of the contemporary fashion brand, Bhane and Veg-NonVeg—India’s only multi-brand sneaker boutique.

We decided to delve a little deeper to find out what makes this indie star tick. Here’s what he had to say:

A photo posted by anand ahuja (@anandahuja) on Jul 3, 2015 at 1:17pm PDT
It was the idea of “teamwork” that got Ahuja excited. He was fascinated with group dynamics and how players are always communicating in basketball matches, to achieve that one goal. He recalls how when he left his plush banking job to become a buyer in U.S. department store Macy’s, he saw group dynamics, teamwork and all everything in between in play off the court. Basketball also gave him a similar sense of community and inclusiveness.

He goes on to say that innovation in shoes excites him. It’s this love for sneakers that encouraged him to start Veg-NonVeg.

He is a huge fan of basketball legend Kobe Bryant since the first time he saw him play in an All - Star game. Besides that, he admires the confidence and determination Michael Jordan exudes. From the new lot of players, he admires LeBron James and mentions that seeing him play is like seeing magic.

A photo posted by anand ahuja (@anandahuja) on Jun 8, 2016 at 8:46am PDT
Anand is not just a basketball fan but also an athlete, so one of his goals is to improve his own performance—mainly to work on his dribbling. On the court, one does things quickly and realizes whether it works or not and accordingly alters the approach. He believes this approach of continued innovation & experimentation and ability to ‘fail fast’ can be applied in any aspect of life.

Basketball gives him passion and he wants to carry forward that feeling to the other parts of his life as well. He advises people to do something that extends beyond their self and do something that only they can uniquely do. Playing sports and being active gives people the opportunity to think about that and he urges people to use that time to reflect and think about what they find the most enjoyable and fulfilling. In the future, he wants to contribute to make basketball a bigger sport in India.
His ‘AA33’ NIKEiD Story "...the spirit of the fan merges with the spirit of the athlete, and in that convergence, in that transference, is the oneness that the mystics talk about..." That is the power of sport. #ShoeDog #ballislife #nikeiD #AA33 #gr8likewhoa
A photo posted by anand ahuja (@anandahuja) on Dec 15, 2016 at 1:03am PST
Anand loves NIKEiD because he believes it allows him to show their individuality in his shoes, and at the same time, be part of a larger community.

There’s a rather interesting story from his childhood that is responsible for his custom-made NIKEiDs. He chose the Kobe XI Elite iD basketball shoes because of his love for the game and the athlete. The heel of the right shoe carries a Mamba Mentality icon. For those who aren’t into the game, he explains that Kobe Bryant defines Mamba Mentality as he is constantly trying to be the best version of himself.

The first basketball jersey he got was a Magic Jersey (Orlando Magic) with the number 33 and his name ‘Ahuja’ printed at the back. He was also known by his initials ‘AA’. This is such a pure and unadulterated memory from his childhood that he converted this into his custom NIKEiD : AA33.

Just like Anand, you can create your own customized shoes at nike.com

Terrorism has no religion and sidelining it with only Islam is just ridiculous. While people are busy propagating religious hate, a group of Muslims in London gathered and distributed a massive 10,000 kilograms of food to the needy and homeless.

It is a religious duty for Muslims to try to help others, irrespective of a person’s faith or background. In the cold winter months when we have the luxury of a home and hot food, it’s easy to forget about others that are in dire need around us. So it is in that spirit we take part in this big food drive”. I hope there are more such initiatives taken around the world that fosters the thought that humanity is bigger than any religion.

Pranav Dhanawade shot to fame last year after he scored a mammoth 1009 runs not out in school cricket. Now, a year later the talented boy is in the news for a reason that will make you furious. Pranav has been arrested by the police and is presently detained. Why? Well, because the guy protested against the conversion of his cricket ground into a helipad for a minister’s arrival.

As usual, dirty politics played out and the budding cricketers were left stranded with nowhere to go. Since the minister in question is BJP’S Prakash Javdekar, the kids had couldn’t figure out which authority to complain to and eventually had to stage a protest.

Of course, they had to bear the brunt of it since it is India and there’s nobody above the corrupt ministers. The protest even turned a bit violent and Pranav was beaten up by the police and thrown behind bars without any valid reason.

Though Punjabi rap is right now at its most cringe-worthy low, the man who started it all still holds his ground as the legend. Bohemia is still the man and still the OG of Punjabi rap. While the current rappers can’t get over with rented Ferraris and calling out ‘Billos’ for no reason, Bohemia’s latest tracks are all soul and every word has a meaning. The man’s still true to his craft of a lyricist and continues to prove with his music that he’s the realest in the game. What started as a craze with his first album went on to become a standalone genre of Punjabi Rap. Sadly though, it was soon taken over by the likes of Honey Singh, that only brought shame and cringe to the genre. Anyhow, Bohemia still continues to write good music and drop bangers every once in a while.

The latest big news coming from the Punjabi rap god is that his biopic is in the making and none other than his good friend Akshay Kumar will be essaying his role. Akshay and Bohemia go a long way and have been great friends since ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ days.

Bohemia, as his usual calm and no-show-off self broke the news via his twitter account. This again shows how what kind of a person Bohemia is. Had it been any other Punjabi rapper, he would have released a song about his biopic with Akshay kumar already! Anyway, hope this comes out super!

Star Indian boxer Vijender Singh defended his WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight title in style with a knock-out win over challenger and former world champion Francis Cheka on Saturday.
    Twitter
The ten-round contest did not last the distance as Vijender knocked out his opponent in the third round itself.
"He (Cheka) wanted to talk more and I wanted to let my punches do the talking. It worked in the end," Vijender said after the bout.
    Twitter
Vijender also thanked the fans for the support. "Big thank you to the crowd for coming and always supporting me. Very happy today," the champ said.

There’s crap, a pile of garbage and under it all, is our infamous Godman Swami Om.
    ColorsTV
The man is stirring some sexist shit up in the Bigg Boss House right now and even getting away with it all. It’s disgusting to know he’s one of the strongest contestants on ‘Bigg Boss 10’.
In the very first episode, he narrated how he kicked Elizabeth Taylor for wearing a ‘revealing and inappropriate’ outfit. Later, he went on to slut shame women in the house and put everyone off in general with his misogynistic mindset.
    ColorsTV
But of course, sexism isn’t the only thing that’s wrong with him. He’s the biggest example of religious intolerance too. The internet dug up this interview of him wherein he threatened to kidnap Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan if they didn’t convert to Hinduism.
He even went to the extent of suggesting that Sharmila Tagore, Gauri Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan married their men for money, nothing else.
Watch the whole video here, and wish you could punch him right in the face.

Aamir Khan is being a lot more generous to his fans than he usually is. Mr. Perfectionist who is known to sign only one film a year is already a part of three upcoming projects, excluding his latest film ‘Dangal’.
    Facebook
Just yesterday, Aamir Khan dropped the teaser of a film called ‘Secret Superstar’ about a girl who wants to make it big in the music industry and become India’s most famous singer. Fans were in for an amusing surprise to see Aamir Khan in an over the top rapper avatar.
Then there’s of course ‘Thugs Of Hindustan’, the much talked about 2018 Diwali release in which he will be sharing screen space with Amitabh Bachchan. But there’s something even more exciting! That Aamir Khan was being considered to play astronaut Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to land in space in his biopic was a fairly known fact. But the movie has finally got an official title now and it basically means it’s really happening! It’s called ‘Saare Jahaan Se Achha’. A title as poignant as that and with Aamir Khan’s perfection, this movie is already a hit!
    Facebook
“Since it's a biopic on the astronaut's life, the team wanted a name that will not only suit the biographical film but also have a patriotic feeling attached. They had two names in mind - Salute and Saare Jahaan Se Achcha and they are going ahead with the latter. It makes more sense," a source told DNA. We would soon be watching Aamir Khan play the legendary astronaut in India’s first space film. How cool is that?

We all talk about how difficult it is for the poor to survive, especially in this weather. We look at them shivering in the cold, on pavements, with clothes that barely cover their bodies, little children running around barefoot, their noses running, but we rarely step forward to do something about it. We offer them silent sympathies and move on. And most other times, we are so engrossed in our own shit, we never spare a moment to even look at them. Begging is illegal so we can’t do anything about it, we tell our preoccupied proud self.

But there are some people, who can’t help but be kind and generous. There are people who despite their limited means go all out to help those in need. One such person was this Uber driver, Vivek Kumar, who spotted a homeless man shivering on a traffic signal, and gave away his only jacket to the poor man. How many of us can do that? Oh no, we could never think of parting with our branded stuff, right?
An Uber user, Anirban Bannerjee, shared this story in Facebook post.

“On my way back home, last Friday, my Uber driver, while we were waiting at a traffic signal, suddenly got out of the car and opened the rear door, where I was sitting. He asked me to shift to the other side and folded the seat to take out something. I was a bit alarmed at the very suddenness of his movement but as I saw him pull out a leather jacket, I thought I had understood the situation and went on to pass one of my usual useless comments - ''kaafi thand ho gayi hai''. Then, as the signal had turned green and Delhi, as per character, was blaring car horns at us, he got into his seat, rolled his window down and gave his leather jacket to a homeless man who was only wearing trousers.
''Sach me Sir, kaafi thand hai.''
HuffPost India got in touch with Kumar who told them, ‘I didn't do anything great. This is normal. Everyone should be doing this […] I don't have a jacket right now. But that person needed it more than me. He was sitting there holding his chest. It was a sight I couldn't see,’ he said.
‘I will hopefully afford to buy a jacket in a few days,’ he said.
There is only one thing needed to help people – a kind heart. Hopefully Kumar’s act of kindness will inspire us to be a little more thoughtful and kind to the ones less privileged than us.

2016 was some year. I won’t say great; I won’t say bad. It had its hits’ it had its misses, all of which found its way on to Twitter—our friendly micro-blogging and social networking site. So, out of a case of acute curiosity, we reached out to the Twitter India headquarters to find out what exactly it was that made India tweet phenomenally this year. And they got back to us with a list of the top 10 things that got under the Indian nerves enough to make us want to tweet, incessantly about it. I’m kind of surprised Donald trump didn’t make the cut. And I don’t really know how I feel about it because it just proves that, at the end of it all, we’re a nation obsessed with religion, cricket and celebrities. I’d let you judge the rest.

The platform recorded 650,000 tweets within 24 hours, following the official announcement, and millions of more tweets in the following weeks. The Indian sportspersons seem to be making the most of the wedding season. After Yuvraj Singh and Ishant Sharma, football hotshot Sunil Chhetri has now decided to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend Sonam Bhattacharya early next year.
The Indian football captain reportedly flew down to Kolkata on 15 December to confirm the talks with Sonam's father Subroto Bhattacharya - the mentor of the Indian football team.
Sonam's father, a former Mohun Bagan captain and club legend, gave his approval and wants the marriage to take place around February-March. “Yes, Sunil came and met us. They have been in a relationship and I think they should be happy for the rest of their lives,” Bhattacharya told Hindustan Times today.
“I have seen Sunil grow as a footballer. I got him to Kolkata Maidan in 2003 and he has improved as a footballer. I can compare him to Xavier Pius of our times. He is a good lad and I like his innocence,” he added.
Two weeks back, the social media was abuzz after Chhetri posted a picture wishing Sonam on her 28th birthday on Instagram.
A very happy birthday sweetheart, wish you loads of success and good health.Enjoy and have a blast.?? @sonam_29

Ironically, Lionel Messi, who is Chhetri's football icon, also announced his wedding plans with long-time girlfriend Antonella Roccuzzo on 15 December.

India’s independence from British rule was a hard-fought battle. The most painful and yet the most historic event in the country’s past was the time of independence, that was marred by the bloody partition that tore apart a nation forever. Talented filmmaker Gurinder Chadha of ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ and ‘Bride And Prejudice’ fame is back with what looks like a historical masterpiece.
    © YouTube
The trailer of her film ‘Viceroy’s House’ is out and it gives one a glimpse into those last moments before Independence, when the country was brimming with excitement and fervor. The film focuses on the last viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten (played by celebrated actor Hugh Bonneville), and the turmoil and politics that went on in his palatial house that saw a barrage of Indian and British leaders scampering back and forth.
    © YouTube
What happens when an empire ends? What happens when a nation is born? How did the India-Pak partition actually happen to come about? Looks like Gurinder Chadha’s ‘Viceroy’s House’ has answers to many questions. With actors like Om Puri and Huma Qureshi decorating the star cast, the film looks promising.
Releasing in March 2017, this one’s going to be worth the wait.
