NBA Star Kevin Durant Apologises For Saying India Is 20 Years Behind The World In Experience & Knowledge

Pro basketball superstar Kevin Durant recently visited India, and apparently experienced a lot of culture shock. He ended up making some critical (and ridiculous) comments about the country in an interview with sports website The Athletic

The website quotes Durant as saying, “It's a country that's 20 years behind in terms of knowledge and experience. You see cows in the street, monkeys running around everywhere, hundreds of people on the side of the road, a million cars and no traffic violations. Just a bunch of underprivileged people there and they want to learn how to play basketball. That s— was really, really dope to me.”

He further went on to describe the conditions of the area near Taj Mahal. He said he was expecting a “holy ground, super protected, very, very clean.” But instead, he saw “mud in the middle of the street.”

Like if that wasn't enough, he further added, “houses were not finished but there were people living in them. No doors. No windows ... stray dogs and then, boom, Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world.”

Obviously, this angered a lot of people.

Actress and writer Chhaya Nene wrote an “open letter” addressing his comments, which was published by the American Bazaar

She wrote, “Maybe you need to be educated on a place you deemed ‘rough' and ‘20 years behind.”

Although many Indians actually agreed with Durant, but Nene wasn't one of them.

She went on to list the following points:

    -  The Indian subcontinent was home to the Indus Valley civilization which has been around since the 3rd millennium B.C. America became a nation in 1776.

    -  There are over 1.2 billion people in India. America has just over 324 million.

    -  India has the most populous democracy in the world.

After receiving a lot of backlash and undeservedly so, Durant realized maybe what he said wasn't right and took to Twitter to apologise.

Well, seems like Chhaya Nene wasn't that impressed. But then again, she does live a privileged life as well so it's like the pot calling the kettle black.

The apology is nice but yeah, comments were ridiculous. You live a very privledged life. You visited a place with 1 billion ppl. @KDTrey5 https://t.co/5Lvd1MY4GZ

Durant also said that disrespecting India was never his intention and he plans to return soon to run more Basketball camps for the youth. While he was in the country, Durant helped set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest basketball clinic, with more than 3,400 Indian youths taking part.
