Instagram is no longer an image-sharing social media platform as the company is trying to build its messaging section with a new feature. The feature is already present in many other instant messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. If you have updated the application recently, you can notice in the direct message section that people you follow or those who have previously messaged you can now see when you were last using Instagram.

The new feature is called “Show Activity Status” and is enabled by default which you can choose to turn off if you wish to (I know I have). If you are a private person like me and don't really want people to know when you are active on Instagram, you can disable the activity status from the setting menu. Instagram is probably testing this feature for a number of users. However, it is available for many users already and you may not have noticed it by now. 

Your followers cannot see when you were active most recently on Instagram unless you follow them or have DM-ed them in the past. It will show how many minutes, hours or days ago you were last active. If you are on Instagram, it will show “active now” which can be a bit intruding if you like your privacy.

This feature is already being rolled out in an update for both iOS and Android users. The move came shortly after Instagram launched its standalone messaging app called “Direct”. The application basically works as a separate messaging app which is designed to steer away even more users from Snapchat.

However, if you are a nosy person and like to be up in everyone's business, disabling the feature won't let you see your friends' activity either. This is the only fair feature of the “Show Activity” feature, because why should you be able to stalk someone when they can't do the same to you? Sounds legit, right?
