Last year, Vivo showed off the Vivo APEX 2018 concept and it featured a pop-up sliding camera and thinnest possible bezels. Back then, everyone was excited to see the concept materialize and surprisingly the brand managed to mass produce it within six months. The finished product was called the Vivo NEX.
Now after a year, Vivo has unveiled the APEX 2019 concept and it is even more amusing. Just today we saw Meizu's Zero that is completely holeless. The APE 2019 concept follows a similar line, but with more practicality. To start with, the phone has no buttons and completely relies on Touch Sense technology, it brings together capacitive touch and pressure-sensing.
The software has been optimized to detect pressure or squeezing on the frame and can determine the pressure points location. Secondly, the usual USB port has been replaced by a MagPort. It is a magnetic power connector that enables both charging and data transfer and doesn't require a socket. Even the usual earpiece or speakers are gone and replaced by Body SoundCasting technology that turns the complete display into a speaker.
Last year we witnessed the mainstream adoption of the in-display fingerprint scanner. But, the scanner was limited to a specific area on the screen. With the APEX 2019 concept, Vivo is enabling the complete display to act as a scanner. This enables users to touch almost anywhere on the screen to unlock the device. Also, when you touch the display to unlock, the nearby screen pixels will light up for a faster and more accurate authentication.
Lastly, the concept has 5G support thanks to the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 platform. The phone shall come up with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. Vivo is also bundling along its Jovi AI Assistant. This will be the company's first phone to run 5G.
Why did Vivo decide to remove many of the usual components like the USB port, buttons, and more? To make up space for the 5G modules. It also incorporates a Duplex PCB design to make 20 percent more space.
The company has already announced it will be at MWC 2019 and visitors shall get a chance to experience the device first-hand. For now, this is a concept and there is no word on mass availability. Given Vivo's 2018 timelines, we expect the phone to be ready by the end of 2019 though.
