Off late, we've been seeing a lot of people reading the Preamble to the Indian Constitution at protests, citing the amendments and rights we have as Indian citizens, to make a point. Makes us wonder why we need to read the Preamble to the Indian Constitution only in times of severe unrest and not know or remember it, offhand for life?
While the entire country is going through a form of civil unrest, with protests erupting in different parts of Indian states, we have a rather unique way of instilling faith in children about the Indian Constitution. Unique only because when we were in school, we were only made aware of the Preamble through our civics textbooks. What am I talking about here?

Well, the Maharashtra government has ordered school children from across the state to recite The Preamble to the Indian Constitution, during their morning assemblies from January 26th, 2020, according to a report by NDTV. The announcement was made by Varsha Gaikwad, a Congress MLA and theSchool Education Minister.
âStudents will recite the Preamble to the Constitution every day after morning prayers so that they understand its importance. It is an old government resolution, but we will implement it from January 26,â Gaikwad said in a press conference.

Reading The Preamble to the Indian Constitution every day during morning assembly is part of the âsovereignty of Constitution, welfare of allâ campaign. While we think the campaign is overstressing children on daily duties, while they can learn about the Indian Constitution in their classrooms, we also feel it's important they know it by heart so they're aware of their constitutional rights, at any given time. Earlier, a government resolution in this regard was adopted in February 2013, when the Congress-Nationalist, Congress Party government was in power. The current government though is an alliance between the Shiv Sena, The Congress Party and the Nationalist Congress Party. The move was first thought of in 2009 and it's now going to be a part of familiarising children with the Indian constitution.

If a child reads Preamble every day and takes oath, he understands that he is a citizen of India. Similarly, he should understand the things laid down by the Constitution and learn those values.â Gaikwad said in an interview with ANI.
Well, it's a good practice to follow suit if you really want to understand the Preamble to the Indian Constitution. Learning it from a younger age makes the reality a lot clearer than what some governments try and tell you otherwise.
We hope the students of these schools really stand up for their rights in the future, if and when they're ever questioned!
