Darren Sammy Gets Angry As He Learns The Meaning Of The Racial Slur Used Against Him At The IPL

Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy took to Twitter on Saturday to post about how he had just learned what a particular racial slur meant and that it was directed at him when he was a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the Indian Premier League.

He went on to say that he along with Sri Lanka player Thisara Perera, were subjected to 'Kalu' chants when they played for the team.

In a post, he had written:

âI just learned what that âKaluâ meant when I played for Sunrisers in the IPL. They call me and Perera by that name. I thought it meant strong Stallion. My previous post tells me something different and Iâm angry,â Sammy posted on Instagram on Saturday.

An earlier post read this:

His earlier post read: âOh so thatâs what that meant when they called me and @tp_perera kalu in India when we played for Sunrisers. I just thought they were calling me a strong black man⦠Iâm more piss (sic) now.â

Sammy Darren has also escalated this issue to the International Cricket Council (ICC), urging the global institution to speak up and set strong guidelines against racism.

While he is probably the first cricketers to have come out in public in the light of the growing movement #BlackLivesMatter, he is perhaps not the only player to have have been subjected to the slur.

â@ICC and all the other boards are you guys not seeing whatâs happening to ppl like me? Are you not gonna speak against the social injustice against my kind. This is not only about America. This happens every day #BlackLivesMatter now is not the time to be silent. I wanna hear u,â the cricketer posted in a separate tweet tagging all the relevant institutions.

Another follow-up tweet said: âFor too long black people have suffered. Iâm all the way in St Lucia and Iâm frustrated If you see me as a teammate then you see #GeorgeFloyd Can you be part of the change by showing your support. #BlackLivesMatterâ.

Chris Gayle, too, posted adding to the thread. âI have traveled the globe and experience racial remarks towards me because I am black, believe me, the list goes on,â Gayle posted on his Instagram story.

Despite these allegations that are surfacing now, ICC has maintained that they have a zero-tolerance policy towards all kinds of racism or homophobia, and the offenders could be given a lifetime ban.
