Apple Is Reportedly Testing Its Foldable iPhone And We May Have A Release Date For It

We’ve heard rumours of Apple working on its foldable iPhone for a while, however a new report from the Economic Daily gives us a bit more information. The report claims that Apple ordered a number of prototype models to test the durability of the hinge design by Apple. Apple wants to make sure that the foldable device can withstand 100,000 opening and closing actions. To put things into perspective, laptops that also need to be tested for opening and closing cations, are only tested for 20,000 to 30,000 openings.

However, a foldable smartphone is opened and closed multiple times in a day and would be required to last longer than any laptop. “According to the supply chain,” the report goes on to say, “Apple is currently testing key components such as the screen and bearings of the folding machine in order to make the first folding iPhone available as soon as possible.”

The foldable iPhone also seems to have a planned launch date where the report suggests we may see it arrive in September 2022. While there is no concrete source to back up the claim, it should only be taken at face value as companies tend to change plans. Previous rumours have suggested what we can expect from a foldable iPhone. It is expected to be different from Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Z Flip. Apple recently filed several patent applications for foldable smartphones which could give us an idea of what we can expect from the foldable iPhone.

The foldable iPhone might look entirely different from the foldable smartphone we’ve already seen as it is rumoured to consist of two separate displays on a hinge. Apple leaker Jon Prosser has said in the past “It doesn’t look like they just stuck two phones together, Even though they’re two separate panels when the displays are extended, it looks fairly continuous and seamless.”

The smartphone is also not expected to have a Face ID notch but rather have a small bezel that will house all the sensors for Face ID. A previous leak also suggested that Apple ordered prototype foldable displays units from Samsung for testing and it seems like the company may have finalised a design that will set it apart from the other folding devices.
