Govt Says Social Media Misuse Will Result In Tough Action & Folks Want Them To Start With IT Cells

Yesterday, we all laughed together at people campaigning to get Twitter banned ON Twitter because, sure, that makes perfect sense.

Yes, using a platform to get that same platform banned in your country just because they want to give people freedom of speech is a totally rational thing to happen recently.

But since there has been so much controversy surrounding Twitter, especially after the company didn't fully comply with the Indian government's order to block multiple accounts, the government has also weighed in on the Twitter debate.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, currently serving as the Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister, discussed the matter in the Parliament today and talked about the consequences of spreading fake news and inciting violence using social media.

After sharing the advantages of social media in India, how it has empowered the common man, he also mentioned that the misuse of it will lead to tough action.

We respect social media a lot, it has empowered common people. Social media has a big role in Digital India programme. However, if social media is misused to spread fake news, violence then action will be taken: Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in Rajya Sabha pic.twitter.com/M2NTIrh1ia

Specifically talking about  Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn in the Rajya Sabha, the Union Minister said "you have millions of followers in India, you are free to do business and make money, but you will have to follow the Indian constitution".

While what actions would be taken is unclear, both left and right-leaning people have already come up with lists of people spreading 'fake news' on Twitter and want them banned. A lot of people are still continuing with the Ban Twitter hashtag from yesterday.

@ndtv ? @thewire_in ? @TheQuint ? @scroll_in ? @zoo_bear ? Etc there are many examples.

Isn't Twitter doing exactly that?

Everyone is on radar, you have been given Freedom of Speech but people are using Freedom of Spoech to abuse Freedom of Speech. That's not right, Twitter has to follow Law of Land.

Hmm.

Kangana tweets are routinely deleted by twitter and even her sister was blocked.

Sure.

Ravi Shankar Prasad sir, you can replace "fake news" with "Amit Malviya". That won't be any problem.

Shots fired.

Good to see the government being very critical of their own IT wing, taking responsibility for a change. https://t.co/edtQqrKEMy

Let's hope it doesn't happen.

If not today then tomorrow, Twitter will be banned in India. https://t.co/yIlhRzh4Xd
