Carl Pei’s ‘Nothing’ Now Owns The ‘Essential’ Brand And We Might See Its Smartphones Again Soon

Essential, the smartphone company launched by Android co-creator Andy Rubin has now been sold to OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. The Essential brand has now been acquired by UK based ‘Nothing’; Pei’s latest venture for consumer technology products.

The news comes from a report by 9to5Google, which states that Nothing might be getting to smartphones considering Pei’s success with the OnePlus brand. We already know ‘Nothing’ will be launching wearables and smart devices in the near future and it seems like Essential’s acquisitor will make the ecosystem come full circle.

We still don’t know what Nothing will do with the Essential brand, however, the logical next step would be to launch smartphones. Now that Nothing owns all of Essential’s trademarks, logo and branding, we could soon see Essential smartphones. Nothing founder Carl Pei wants to bring back artistry and passion to consumer technology and with Essential’s design language that could very well be possible.

Essential smartphone, the Ph-1 has been awarded in the past for having a great design and still remains a favourite amongst fans. Essential’s minimal design language and focus on bloat-free Android could be the reason why Pei opted to buy the brand’s intellectual property. Carl Pei started OnePlus with the same ethos and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it carried forward with the Nothing brand.

Having said that, it could also be possible that Pei was interested in the “Essential” nomenclature more than anything and probably wants to call one of the products with that name. Nothing is currently working on a pair of TWS earbuds according to rumours. We can’t really say when one can expect a smartphone from the Nothing or Essential brand. Nothing is expected to reveal something new very soon as suggested by the countdown on its website.
