This Rare Copy Of First Superman Comic Went For A Record Rs 23.8 Crores

Superman, the Man of Steel, is considered to be one of the most influential superheroes in the comic book world as well as in cinema, so it is no surprise that the rare copy of the first comic featuring the vigilante got sold for a record $3.2 million or Rs 23.8 Crore.Β

The news of the record sale was announced by ComicConnect.com, an online auction and consignment company based in New York.

"The issue of Action Comics #1 went for $3.25 million in a private sale," said Comic Connect in a statement.Β

Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman made his first appearance in the Action Comics #1, which was published on April 18, 1938.Β

The comic book includes the story of Superman's origins and his journey from being the lone survivor of his deceased planet, Krypton, to becoming Earth's greatest superhero.Β Β

"(It) really is the beginning of the superhero genre", said ComicConnect.com co-owner, Vincent Zurzolo, who brokered the sale.Β

Since the publishing of the rare comic back in the 1930s, the much-loved character has been adapted to movies, TV shows, radio serials, novels, and theatre.Β

As per reports, only around 100 copies of the Superman number 1 issue are in existence all over the world.Β

Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage also once owned a copy of this rare comic, which, according to Zurzolo, is found in varying conditions with different owners.Β

However, Zurzolo says that the recently sold copy is amongst the best-kept copies of the original comic.Β

β€œThere’s no comic book that you could value higher in terms of a comic book than Action Comics #1,” he said.

According to the statement of ComicConnect.com, the comic book had been "buried in a stack of old 1930s movie magazines" and in mint condition.Β

The seller had bought the comic book back in 2018 for slightly more than $2 million.Β

"The seller made a $1m profit on the comic after owning it for just three years. The anonymous buyer is relatively new to comic investing," said the ComicConnect.com statement.Β
