People Are Drilling Holes In AirTags To Avoid Buying Accessories And It’s Probably Not A Good Idea

The Apple AirTags aren’t particularly cheap to purchase and don’t come with an accessory such as a keychain to prevent the tracker from getting lost. However, some people have found a way to get around buying an accessory by drilling a hole through the AirTag. People are drilling holes through the plastic outer ring of the AirTag so that one can pass a string or a keychain ring through the hole.

The first images of an AirTag with a hole surfaced in the MacRumors forums where a member called smythey had drilled a hole that doesn’t look too elegant. In fact, the reason why one should not drill a hole into the AirTag is probably because it might void the warranty in the process.

According to the forum user, the AirTag was working normally even after drilling the hole. From the image, we can see that the hole was drilled through the outer circular plastic cover. The hole completely avoids the circular steel frame and the tiny PCB inside it. It seems a bit unnecessary as one small mistake could result in a useless AirTag.

While it is a clever way to avoid spending extra on the accessories, it could cost a lot more if users are not careful. Having said that, you can always get cheaper third-party accessories for your AirTag, sometimes considerably cheaper than Apple’s offering.

Having said that, if you are interested in actually drilling a hole in your AirTag, we recommend following the method posted by iFixit. The iFixit team was able to drill a hole without damaging the tracker and gives a good step-by-step guide on the website for you to follow.
