Long before cinema became experimental and various genres erupted, the scope of movie making in the 90s was restricted to makers directing movies which catered to a particular family crowd mostly. Even though today we have an insane variety on OTT, there are some cult movies which defined the way we perceived Bollywood while growing up. Here are 7 movies which are basically an emotion for us:

1. Hum Saath Saath Hain

Even today, if this movie is played on TV, chances are you will stop and watch it, with every scene rolling in your mind. For anyone who grew up in a big joint family, this movie signified the love, the fun and the memories attached to playing around with so many cousins, attending so many weddings and having many uncles and aunts who never left a chance to pamper us.

2. Andaz Apna Apna

Comedy in the 90’s had a benchmark of this movie, which was simple and humorous. One can watch this repeatedly and yet never get bored.

3. Rangeela

This was a movie which was ahead of its times. A beautiful Urmila who changed how fashion was perceived for the modern Indian girl and the hook step to the title track was something we all tried to learn.

4. Dil Toh Pagal Hai

Before KKHH explained to us that ‘pyar dosti hai’, this movie had already established that love can exist in many forms and friendship is one pure version of it. Also, how can you forget the iconic dance duet between Karisma and Madhuri which lit the screens on fire.

5. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar

A super sexy Pooja Bedi straight out of Marilyn Monroe dreams, a clichéd character of Aamir Khan representing how class difference influences a student’s personality and oh, Pehla Nasha, the song which continues to jog our memories when we think of a song about our first junior school crush.

6. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

“Jaa Simran Ja, jee le apni zindagi”, DDLJ gave us hope that true love will happen when we grow up. It lit up dreams of European vacations, eating ice cream in the snow, catching a train by holding a good looking stranger’s hand, and that mandoline will play every time we fall in love.

7. Border

You were probably only 6 or 7 years old when this movie ended up lighting a fire of patriotism in you and you caught yourself dreaming of joining the Army. This movie and its soundtrack continues to give us goosebumps.
