Anil Kapoor Celebrates 20 Years Of 'Nayak' & Revealed Why He Decided To Do The Film

Nayak released in the year 2001 and the storyline revolved around a corrupt CM who wasn’t helping the state grow.

The film was released 20 years ago and was a commercial failure back then. However, the film went on to acquire cult status over the years.

Anil Kapoor took to Instagram and wrote as the film completed two decades, “20 years ago I was the Reel life CM for a day and the rest is history! A lot of people had their views about me doing #Nayak but I knew I had to do this film & believed in its message! And now here we are celebrating #20yearsofNayak!!”

Anil Kapoor plays the role of Shivaji Rao, an honest journalist who gets the opportunity to interview the CM and ask him scandalous questions.

The CM is shown to be corrupt and is unable to handle the reality check given by the journalist.

CM Balraj Chauhan then asks Shivaji Rao to become CM for one day in order to understand how difficult his job is. While Chauhan thinks his day will go to waste, Rao ends up making many changes and delivers a comparatively clean and hopeful system.

Nayak was directed by filmmaker S. Shankar. It was a remake of his own Tamil directorial Mudhalvan.

Anil said in an interview, “Honestly, all we knew while making the film was that it would be something special. Something for the ages. We had no clue it would gain the kind of traction that it did.”

He added, “I think it’s the subject matter that is just so relevant and relatable. The people, the government, and the tensions therein will always remain a topic of great interest and personal relevance.”

He also said, “I remember the fight scenes, each of which felt like a film in its own. Back then we did not have the technology that we have now so it was all raw hard work and choreography.”
