‘I Am Not Racist’ Michael Vaughan Trapped By His Own Words As More Witnesses Come Forward

Michael Vaughan was recently suspended on a temporary basis by the BBC from the Radio 5 live’s Tuffers and Vaughan Show on Monday after facing allegations of making racist comments while playing for Yorkshire in 2009.

According to The Guardian, Vaughan has been accused of telling three Asian cricketers that there were “too many of you lot, we need to do something about it” ahead of a county cricket match against Nottingham.

The former England skipper has “completely and categorically” denied saying those words to the Asian cricketers in his Daily Telegraph column, although agreeing to have his name being mentioned in the racism case of the Azeem Rafiq report.

"The night before I was due to give evidence, out of the blue, I was hit with the news that Rafiq was alleging that in 2009, when I was still a player and before a Yorkshire match against Nottinghamshire, I had said to Rafiq and two other Asian players as we walked onto the field together that there are "too many of you lot, we need to do something about it.

"This hit me very hard. It was like being struck over the head with a brick. I have been involved in cricket for 30 years and never once been accused of any remotely similar incident or disciplinary offence as a player or commentator. That the allegation came completely out of the blue and more than a decade after it was alleged to have happened made it all the more difficult to process.

Upon reading his comments, yet another Asian-origin player from Yorkshire, this time the former Pakistan all-rounder Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, has challenged Vaughan’s statement, while suggesting that he too had heard what the Englishman had said.

"I am very surprised to hear that Michael Vaughan, who is a big name player, is denying what he said. I was witness to it and the other 4-5 Asian players who were playing must have also heard it and should be asked about it," Rana Naved-ul-Hasan said.

As the investigation grows deeper, more and more instances of Vaughan’s questionable behaviour are coming forward. Some of his old tweets in which he had said “YES” to the suggestion of Moeen Ali going around asking Muslims if they are terrorists, have also reappeared on the internet after Vaughan had deleted it from his profile.
