Did You Know Ranveer's 83 Had Footfalls Lower Than This Flop SRK Film In The First Week?

Ranveer Singh's 83, directed by Bajrangi Bhaijaan fame Kabir Khan, was released during the Christmas weekend and has turned out to be a disappointing affair at the box office. In the first week of its release, the film collected Rs 71.87 crore at the domestic box office, however, much more was expected from it.

Due to the delay in the release of Shahid Kapoor-starrer Jersey, 83 is getting the benefit of another open week. But, the biopic of former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev had very low footfalls in the first week.

According to boxoffice india only around 38 lakh tickets of 83 were sold in the first week of its release which is lower than the first-week footfalls of Shah Rukh Khan's flop film Zero, co-starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. Yes, you read that right!

Reportedly over 39 lakh tickets of Zero, directed by Aanand L Rai, were sold in the first week. Well, this speaks a lot as SRK's 2018 film turned out to be a big flop. However, we should also keep in mind that 83 released amid the Omnicron scare while Zero hit the silver screen in 2018, way before the coronavirus pandemic struck the world.

While trade experts think that the high ticket rates of 83 contributed to its failure, the film would have witnessed even lower collection in case of the lower ticket prices.

In the second week of its release, 83 got the benefit of the New Year and is yet to witness a big drop. On January 1, the film did a business of Rs 7.73 crore taking the total collections to Rs 83.96 crore. However, it is still facing stiff competition from Spider-Man: No Way Home and Allu Arjun's Pushpa.

The biopic also features Deepika Padukone, Saqib Saleem, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Harrdy Sandhu among others in crucial roles and each of them has earned acclaim for their performance. For the unversed, Vicky Kaushal too was supposed to be a part of 83, however, he chose not to sign the film. Reportedly, he was initially approached to play the role of cricketer Mohinder Amarnath and he even auditioned for the part. But, then Raazi was released and turned out to be a huge hit. While Kabir Khan was keen to have him on board, the actor decided to not play the second lead in the film. At last, the makers roped in Saqib for the role
