It was always believed that one could either be a star or an actor in the entertainment industry until the legendary Dilip Kumar entered the world of cinema and proved how he can be both.

Many believe that the ‘tragedy king’ had the Midas touch of method acting and any role he picked was turned into magic. He gave us movies like Mughal-E-Azam and Devdas which are synonymous to his name, not the script.

He left for his heavenly abode this morning and also left the world filled with his memories. The original superstar of Bollywood was not just an actor but was a pillar of constant inspiration for every other actor who entered the industry after him. Here are 5 times when actors spoke about how he left them in awe of his persona:

1. SRK

Known as the ‘Badshaah’ of B-town, King Khan has always been vocal about the memories he has with Dilip Kumar. When he became an actor, he felt that he looked like the legendary actor and in an interview he once spoke about his childhood days when he got acquainted with Dilip Kumar. “I knew Dilip saab as a kid. Dad knew him. They used to live in the same galli in Delhi. I've met Dilip saab many times in my childhood. We have been to his place often. Actually, Sairaji doesn't remember this but her medicines used to be sent by my aunt from London. Years later, when I was working with Ketan Mehta, I saw a picture of Dilip Kumar in his office and I was like oh! that's me. He looked so much like me in that picture. Or rather I looked so much like him. But my relationship with Dilip saab goes beyond films. Dilip saab and Sairaji have always thought of me as their son."

2. Dharmendra

The Sholay superstar who continues to enjoy the love of millions of fans has always been in awe of Dilip saab. He has often shared throwback pictures with him and shared anecdotes from their memories. One time he mentioned how he wanted to be just like Dilip Kumar and said “Naukri kartaa cycle par aata-jaata, Filmy posters mein apni jhalak dekhta, Raton ko jaagta anhone khwaab dekhta Subha uthkar aaine se puchhta "mein Dilip Kumar ban sakta hun kya?"

3. Amitabh Bachchan

One would imagine what possibly could intimidate or inspire the man who inspires the whole world? His army of fans continue to visit his residence and get a glimpse of this magnum opus of a star, but Big B, in an interview with Filmfare, once mentioned how he loves Dilip Kumar’s work more than anything else. “Almost all his films were inspirational and worthy of mention but Ganga Jumna (1961) was a favorite. For someone born and brought up in Allahabad, UP, the land of Awadhi, to watch and hear Dilip saab ostensibly from Mumbai, behave and speak the perfect diction of a UP inhabitant was incredible," he said.

4. Salman Khan

Even Bhai thinks that no one greater has stepped foot in the industry. In an old interview, he said “Actor wise, I don't think anyone is bigger than Dilip Kumar, after that Mr Amitabh Bachchan had a very good run and he's working even today and is everywhere”.

A star from the Earth has left the mortal world to become an immortal star of the Universe today. His work, the lives he touched and the memories he created, continue to live on in the hearts of everyone. We pray for the peace of his blessed soul.
