The budget comes at a time when India is battling the COVID-19 pandemic and the economy is reeling under the after-effects of the nationwide lockdown.
Sitharaman has raised hopes by stating that Budget 2021-22 will “be a Budget like never before.” Expectations are high that the government will boost economic revival by focusing on infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, rural economy, MSMEs sectors impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions.
As per the latest developments, Sitharaman, in her Budget 2021 speech has said that two or more Covid-19 vaccines will arrive.
Meanwhile, the Finance Minister has also said that the government is committed to the welfare of farmers, which was followed by sloganeering in the parliament.
Latest developmentsIn the budget presented today, India's Agri Credit Target was raised to Rs 16.5 lakh crore. It was announced that 1.54 crore farmers have benefited from MSP in paddy and wheat in FY21 vs 1.24 crore YoY.
The amount paid to farmers for wheat in FY21 was Rs 75,060 crore vs Rs 62,802 crore in FY20, and for paddy in FY21 seen at Rs 1.72 crore vs Rs 1.41 lakh crore in FY20, the Finance Minister said.
Amount paid to farmers for pulses in FY21 stood at Rs 10,530 crore vs Rs 8,285 crore in FY20.
Unlike in the past, when agriculture often got no more than mere lip service, this time around, Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman took care to ensure her Budget prioritises farmers.
The announcements come amid ongoing farmers’ agitation to protest against the new farm laws passed by the government. Several rounds of discussions have ended without a resolution.
