  4. After the success of the series Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors, actor Pankaj Tripathi along with other prominent names including Pratik Gandhi, Vijay Varma, Pavail Gulati, Nakuul Mehta and Karan Tacker have collaborated to create awareness about the concept of consent in our society. The campaign is around how ‘poochna zaroori hai’ and making people aware of how it is important to ask for consent through a powerful video. The video surrounds the concept of consent whether one is married or not. Checkout the full video here- View this post on Instagram The show Criminal Justice revolves around the story of Anu Chandra, played by actor Kirti Kulhari who is a victim of marital sexual abuse. The story is the reality of many married women in India. The show sheds light on how distressing the issue of marital sexual abuse in India is and how it affects the victim’s life. View this post on Instagram Pankaj Tripathi said in an interview, “It was unknown to me as well on why women kept quiet when they went through some trauma in their personal life, they were tight-lipped when asked to share their problems. I, as a man, didn't really know how to decode it. This issue exists in our society, whether we stay in liberal urban cities or places outside the city, so why not speak up. But after playing the character of Madhav Mishra and decoding why Anuradha Chandra killed her husband I finally understood why most women like her are not vocal about their problems. Especially with issues related to their married lives because clearly, society demands them to be locked in the closed doors of their homes. Through this show, we hope that more and more women are invoked to share their problems and take the right step for themselves." This is a much needed campaign and we need more of these. 5. Did you ever imagine living in a world where even buying a cup of tea would make you feel a little uncomfortable? No, right? Well, brace yourself because things have gotten a little weird. We've learned that one of the famous Indian cafes in New Delhi is collecting its users' facial data without their consent. Yes, we're talking about 'Chaayos', which you probably already know, is one of the most popular retail chains that serves a range of beverages and snacks. It looks like they're trying to get rid of OTPs by replacing them with facial recognition systems. It sounds like the right thing to do because entering your login credentials, OTP, etc. can be a little annoying at times. But it's actually very weird in this case if you think about it. Like, what if someone just stops by and takes your picture without your consent? Sounds super creepy, doesn't it? Turns out, Chaayos has been doing this for quite some time now. At select Chaayos outlets, they've apparently installed facial recognition systems to eliminate the need to enter OTP and login as a returning customer. But they've been collecting facial date without the user consent and this was brought to notice by one of the customers on Twitter. Here's a video in which you can see the facial recognition system doing its thing without even asking for user consent. No warming message, alert page, etc. Just stand in front of the tablet and it takes a picture of your face. Check it out - In Chaayos' defense, it's worth pointing out that this is just a test which they're experimenting with to see if it works. They've also said that the facial data is securely saved and cannot be accessed by anybody including their own staff. But it's indeed quite alarming considering the fact that there are so many other cases of poor data handling. In fact, if you dig deep into Chaayos' terms and conditions, it says there's no guarantee that a customer data would always remain private to the company and we shouldn't expect it to always remain private. It certainly raises a lot of questions. You can read it if you want by clicking right here. Going through @chaayos terms and condition. This line, among so many others, stood out. This could be a on a t-shirt. pic.twitter.com/T4myye2WwC — Nikhil Pahwa , https://mstdn.social/@nixxin (@nixxin) November 21, 2019 They even say that "Your use of the website and voluntarily providing above-mentioned Personal information through facial recognition feature at the outlet/ store of the company constitutes your CONSENT to all the terms and conditions contained in this privacy policy (as amended from time to time) and you shall be bound by the same." Look, Biometric information is sensitive data and we don't think you should be giving out valuable data just like that for no valid reason. Yes, the system hasn't been installed at all Chaayos outlets and they say it's highly secure, but it's best if you use the standard OTP option. We're glad that Chaayos is giving an option to completely opt-out of the biometric option and even delete all your pictures from their database. You can also continue using Chaayos and buy their products without providing your phone number too. Here's an official statement given to MensXP by Chaayos - "At Chaayos, we are extremely conscious about our customer's data security and privacy and are committed to protecting it. Data from the facial recognition feature is encrypted and cannot be accessed by any party, including Chaayos itself except for the purpose of logging-in our customers. There is no third party sharing of the data for any purpose. And Chaayos does not use or process this information for any other purpose. Moreover, customers have the right to not opt in for facial recognition feature and instead use their phone number to enjoy benefits of our loyalty program. Even providing phone number is not mandatory to enjoy a cup of chai or other products at Chaayos. We also provide our customers with a permanent “Opt-out” feature on our website, where-in they can choose to permanently delete their pictures captured by our systems at any point of time . Our café staff are also well trained to help customers register or opt-out of the feature." In a country like India where there are no norms for using facial recognition and no privacy laws, this is just asking for more trouble. The idea of buying a cup of tea much quickly without having to go through the hassle of OTP sounds like a good idea, but it comes with its fair share of risks. After all, we're living in a world where sensitive data can be turned against us at any time. It's always a good practise to go through all the terms and conditions and know the system better before using them. View the full article

  9. This week Aziz Ansari's name was added to list of most high profile hollywood celebrities embroiled in sexual assault allegations. Aziz was accused by a young photographer identified as Grace in a story published by the website Babe. In the interview, Grace accused Ansari of sexual assault and ignoring her verbal and non-verbal clues after they arrived at his apartment. Aziz apologized to Grace the next morning after learning of her trauma the night before, replying, “Clearly, I misread things in the moment and I'm truly sorry.” Most men don't understand the power of desire, especially when it's the result of a chance sexual encounter. Every bit of sanity goes out the window when the guy involved in that sexual encounter is a celebrity and the girl is a charmed fan looking for the virtues of the character he's played on screen. And so, Aziz Ansari's behaviour on the date with Grace falls under that realm. Most social reactions to the story say that Aziz Ansari is no Harvey Weinstein even though both cases reinforce the culture of sexual exploitation, irrespective of whether it amounts to abuse and harassment or not. It is here that we find ourselves at the crossroads of sexual liberties we've often enjoyed and what it means for how we (men), understand consent. We've been taught to pursue the woman we like and keep at it no matter what, to never give up unless she agrees to be courted. It is this culture that instills the sense of entitlement in us and it's the same culture that is responsible for the kind of 'chivalry' some women drool over. There's a need for an overhaul because most of us, like Aziz, do not know how to handle and live in a culture that de-normalizes forced intimacy. Most of us won't acknowledge it publicly but they know exactly what Grace means when she compared the sexual encounter in the apartment to a football play. “But the main thing was that he wouldn't let her move away from him. She compared the path they cut across his apartment to a football play. “It was 30 minutes of me getting up and moving and him following and sticking his fingers down my throat again. It was really repetitive. It felt like a fucking game.” In short, Aziz just couldn't understand why this girl he took to a date wasn't actually going for it even though they had performed oral *** and that's the dilemma that's polarized the discussion around the issue on social media. In an environment that demands more freedom for women to have a say in their sexual desires, we must understand one thing first; that everyone has the right to say yes to one thing and no to another. If a woman agrees to make out, it does not necessarily give us the license for ***. In fact, if at any point during a sexual encounter she isn't comfortable, it has to stop. It cannot be emphasised enough that it's only consensual when it's enthusiastic and not regretful. The problem in Aziz's case is the lack of the basic understanding of the word 'No'. What everyone across the board seems to agree on and demand is the recalibration of our ideas related to consent because if she feels violated, it's a no; if she feels pressured, it's a no; if you think you're getting mixed signals, it's a no; if she politely asks to take it slow, it's a definite no. But this still doesn't resolve the issue because what happens when a girl refuses to go for it 'in the moment'? Can women expect us to be respectful of their wishes? Or should we just try and go for it even though they might not actually want it because that's 'okay'? Is goading your date into *** knowing fully well that it's against her wish, a sign of a bad date or abuse? These are just some of the issues that need to be discussed if we are going to tarnish every Aziz with the Weinstein paint. Aziz exhibited all the traits of a typical entitled man and Grace found herself unable to do anything about it leading up to the eventual goodbye even though she clearly had the freedom to say no. But with so many conventions related to dating and *** being questioned since the #MeToo movement started, it's really difficult to distinguish between sexual assault and sexual coercion. This particular case, however, warrants a deeper understanding of consent by men and a stronger will to say stand up and say no by women. Only if this is taken care of will we see some headway in the modern feminist movement.
  10. RIYADH: Saudi women no longer need a man´s consent to carry out certain activities, local media reported on Friday. Saudi Arabia has some of the world´s tightest restrictions on women, and is the only country where they are not allowed to drive. Under the guardianship system a male family member, normally the father, husband or brother, must grant permission for a woman´s study, travel and other activities. But the Arab News said a royal decree issued by King Salman ordered that women are no longer required to obtain a guardian´s consent for official services "unless there is a legal basis for this request" under Islamic law. Government agencies were advised of this directive, the report said. Other Saudi media including the Sabq online newspaper, which is close to authorities, have carried similar reports. Sahar Hassan Nasief, a women´s rights activist in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, welcomed royal attention to the issue but said it remained unclear what will change under the decree. "We still need more. We still need to get rid of the guardianship completely," she told AFP. Nassima al-Sadah, an activist in the Gulf coast city of Qatif, said she does not think the government is about to end guardianship. "Maybe they will just reduce it," she said. Last year thousands of people signed a petition calling for an end to guardianship. United Nations special rapporteur Philip Alston, on a visit to Saudi Arabia in January, said the guardianship system needs reform. Activists say that even female prisoners have to be received by the guardian upon their release, meaning some have to languish in jail or a shelter beyond their sentences if the man does not want to accept them. Although the government no longer requires guardian permission for women to work, Human Rights Watch said in an earlier report that many employers still demand guardian consent in order to hire a woman. Some hospitals also require a guardian´s approval before carrying out medical procedures, it said. Activists say that if they have open-minded male family members, getting their consent is not a problem.
  11. In a nation as obsessed with its film personalities as ours, the idea of personal space isn’t as commonly understood as you’d think, especially when it’s a woman in question. Vidya Balan who is known to have a friendly rapport with her fans lost her cool recently and for some very legit reasons. Vidya Balan was at the Kolkata airport with the producer and director of ‘Begum Jaan’, her upcoming film when a fan requested to click a selfie with her. © BCCL As most celebrities would, Vidya Balan obliged her fan. According to a report by Spotboye, the moment Vidya Balan agreed to the fan’s demand of clicking a selfie with him, the man put her arm around her without even asking her. “Don’t”, she said sternly. “Please, don’t do that.” Her manager warned the fan too when he didn’t immediately take his hand off Vidya. During his second attempt to click a selfie with her, he put her arm around her once again, despite being asked not to, the moment she turned towards the camera. “What do you think you are doing? This is wrong.” Vidya Balan confronted him but he continued to ask for a selfie. “No you can’t, behave yourself!” Vidya Balan lashed back at him and walked off. © BCCL Later, in a conversation with Spotboye, she said. “When a stranger puts an arm around you, be it a man or a woman you get uncomfortable because they are intruding into your personal space. We are public figures, not public property.” Well, the fan sure got his lesson. A no is a NO. As simple as that.
  12. “Don’t cry, you are a boy” or “Hey she said no, but she doesn’t really mean it, go ahead” – such terms are very common and have inadvertently become a part of our daily lingo. While you might think that there’s nothing wrong in using such phrases, one often doesn’t realize that they are actually conditioning themselves to believe in it, which is going to turn deadlier with time. Laughing at sexist jokes cracked in a party, enjoying slut-shaming and passing crude comments for fun, might seem normal and harmless; but these have the potential of damaging one’s personality. While there are some people who are still reflecting on ‘homosexuality’ being a taboo, the Health Ministry has taken steps in the right direction and introduced a resource kit called ‘Saathiya’ that has the potential to change people’s attitude towards sensitive issues. Targeted at educating adolescents, this resource material will create awareness about attraction towards the same *** and about the issue of consent. Let’s applaud the Health Ministry for their progressive thinking. © wikimedia Launched under the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram, this resource material will help peer educators discuss sensitive issues and seek answers for their queries in an informed manner. CK Mishra, health secretary, who launched this kit said, “This age group we wanted to reach out to for a long time, and not just reach but reach with an appropriate strategy.” People aged between 15 to 19 years have been selected for the six-day training module. It’s natural for adolescents to be attracted towards each other irrespective of the gender, but at times, they hide those feelings in fear that the society will not accept them and their love will die at the hands of stereotypes. Further, another critical aspect is about taking consent be it inside or outside a relationship, which most of us end up ignoring and result in serious grievances like rape, molestation and sexual assault. With this material in place, people will now understand the importance of consent and why it’s necessary for a healthy relationship. Tears don’t differentiate between the eyes it’s shedding from, yet people find ways to discriminate that as well by conditioning the thought that men or boys don’t cry and girls do. Well, this is kind of stupid because anyone can cry when they want to vent their anger or feelings. © wikimedia Apart from touching on the sensitive issues, the section also talks about addiction, alcohol, smoking, conflict resolution, HIV, sexually transmitted diseases (for both boys and girls) and practicing safe ***. In fact, the section lists ‘masturbation’ as one of the first options for practicing “safe ***” along with information on abortion. This is a great initiative by the Health Ministry and we hope that it reaches the right audience and fulfills the cause it aims at. Source: Indian Express
