  1. The ongoing Test series between India and South Africa has been an eye-opener for the touring side. Considered to be way superior as compared to their opponents, the Men in Blue were in for a surprise in the second Test when the Proteas showed true grit, won the match and tied the series 1-1. One of the biggest talking points out of Test 2 at the Wanderers cricket ground was the Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant’s ability to bat under pressure and how easily he was enraged by the South Africans into playing one of the silliest shots in the longest format of the game and giving up his wicket for cheap. Many even believe that it was Pant’s wicket in the second innings that became the turning point of the match and that if the young southpaw had somehow managed to keep his cool and played a decent knock, India could have won the game and therefore their first-ever Test series victory on South African soil. Obviously, Pant’s childish gameplay made the head coach of the Indian cricket team and a Test cricket veteran, Rahul Dravid rather unhappy. Dravid said that the team management will have a “conversation” with the Roorkee-born about his technique at the pitch. On this occasion, the former Australian cricketer, Brad Hogg has shown his hesitance with the idea of the Indian team management and even Dravid getting Pant all worried about his technique when that is not the real problem that he is struggling with at the moment. Taking Pant’s incredible series-winning inning at the Gabba early last year as a case in point, Hogg suggested that the batter had the technique and has also proven to be able to deliver a great knock under pressure. According to the Aussie, the real problem has to do with his psychology and his weakness comes from acting on impulse. “He’s entertaining but very frustrating to watch - either making a big score or having a brain fade and getting out early which he did in the Johannesburg Test when the team really needed him to lift. Now, we know that he has a reasonable technique… he can play under pressure. He did it in Australia at the Gabba. But in South Africa, he was put under the pump. He walked out of the crease, which tells you that he is a little bit twitchy. He was receiving a few verbals, you could see there was a bit of eagerness. It wasn’t the Rishabh Pant that we know,” Hogg said on his official YouTube channel. View this post on Instagram “Rahul Dravid has come out and said that he’s going to have a word about shot selection with him. I don’t think he needs to do that - technique or tactics. Stay away from that because we know he’s got the goods to deliver. It’s more psychological. Was he in a positive or a negative frame of mind. Did the verbals get to him? Those are the things you should be looking at. When he’s on song, I guarantee you that he’s in a different state of mind. This innings he was in a negative state of mind,” explained Hogg. Pant practically proved Hogg’s point while playing his first inning of the third and final Test of the India-South Africa series in Cape Town when he started his knock with a lot of aggression but quickly fizzled out and tossed a catch into the hands of Keegan Petersen in the 61st over and walked back to the pavilion for just 27 runs. 2. Indian batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane seem to be pacing towards their end as members of the Test squad based on the kind of disappointing batting performances they have been putting up for quite some time now. Former team India cricketer, wicketkeeper and batter, Dinesh Karthik has expressed his opinion on the fate of two of his former teammates and has shown concern about the newly appointed head coach of the squad making some strict and hard-hitting decisions with regards to the two red-ball veterans. View this post on Instagram While talking to Cricbuzz, Karthik explained that the BCCI, the coaching staff and the selection committee have been extremely supportive in giving opportunities to them. Despite their lack of consistency with the bat and a barrage of early dismissals, the team has stuck by them, hoping to see them rise from their ashes once again. However, it seems as if time has run out on them. “At No. 3 in inarguably the world’s best cricket team, to find a spot there for three years and not score a hundred - he (Pujara) will know he’s got a long, long rope. To a large extent they are playing because of the potential they have, and the performances they have shown, and obviously, they are senior statesmen [in the team] as well,” Karthik said. View this post on Instagram “But the long rope they have been given is slowly burning out and you are coming to the end of it. I am very, very sure that they are both aware of it. Also, we have got to see the potential of the players at the back, they have done as well. Now if Virat Kohli returns, you get a feeling that one of the two has to give way,” DK told Cricbuzz. He further said that head coach, Rahul Dravid will have to make some tough decisions regarding Pujara and Rahane’s fate with the team and that ‘The Wall’ will be willing to do that if it means bringing further stability to the team and an opportunity to make improvements even more. View this post on Instagram “When Rahul Dravid was at the fag end of his career, it was actually Pujara who came in and did well at that No. 3 spot, put pressure on him to eventually take his spot… Obviously, that circle comes around. I do think Rahul Dravid will have to make a couple of harsh decisions and if that means dropping one or both of them, he’ll be open to it because he knows that they have been given a long rope before…” “You don’t want to set the ground ablaze by making the big decisions right at the outset so I think he’s waiting and trying to assess what he can contribute to their careers and if it’s not meant to be, it’s not meant to be,” Karthik concluded. View this post on Instagram During the first inning of the second Test match against South Africa, the team was struggling to put up a decent total for the hosts to chase. They needed their middle order to play a steady game and put up a show. Instead, Pujara took 33 deliveries to score just three runs and then get dismissed while getting completely stunned by Duanne Olivier and lofting an easy catch into the hands of Temba Bavuma. On the other hand, Rahane managed to get the first ever golden-duck of his career in the longest format of the game. View this post on Instagram While other than skipper KL Rahul and Ravichandran Ashwin's innings none of the other batters seemed to have a big impact on the Indian total, the consistency with which Pujara and Rahane have been playing has led to some of the biggest of their supporters to doubt them. Even the former captain of the Indian cricket team, Sunil Gavaskar expressed his concerns about the two cricketers and said that they might have the second inning of the ongoing match to save themselves from getting dropped and replaced by some of the younger talents desperately waiting for their turn. 3. India achieved great results in the last four years with Ravi Shastri at the helm but that era came to an end earlier this month with his departure. He has been replaced by another legend of the game Rahul Dravid and people have already started making comparisons as to how different the two tenures will be. It’s too early to predict the amount of success India will have in Dravid’s regime but one thing is for sure that unlike the former head coach, the new coach will be more humble in his approach. Whether the team wins or loses, his behaviour won’t change much. © Reuters Unlike Shastri, who used to make tall claims calling his side the greatest cricket team of all-time, many believe the current coach would refrain from making such big statements and leave it upto the fans and pundits to be the judges of that. Many might argue that Shastri did nothing wrong by boasting about his team but former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels that it’s not a coach’s job to do, and described it as his biggest shortcoming. © Reuters “The one thing I found surprising is that when you play well, you don't usually boast about it. It's fine if others talk about it; when we won the 2011 World Cup, no one gave statements saying that this team is the best in the world, let alone country,” Gambhir said on Times Now Navbharat. Gambhir said that even if the team achieves great results Dravid’s statements will always remain balanced. He won’t go make big statements about the players and their performances. © Rishabh Pant Instagram “When you win, let others talk about it. You won in Australia, that's a big achievement no doubt. You won in England, performed well, no doubt. But let others praise you. You won't hear such statements from Rahul Dravid. Whether India play good or bad, his statements will always remain balanced. Moreover, it will reflect on other players. “Humility is very important, whether you play good or bad. Cricket won't go on forever. I think Dravid's major focus will be on players being good people first,” he added. View this post on Instagram Whatever Gambhir said about Dravid, turned out to be true after the New Zealand T20I series. The way India outclassed the touring team and completed a clean-sweep, Dravid could have heaped praise on his players and boasted about how they were able to put the T20 World Cup heartbreak behind them and perform as a complete unit but he didn’t do any of that. While acknowledging that it was great to start off his tenure with a series win, he urged the players to “keep our feet on the ground” and be "realistic about this win." © Twitter BCCI “It was a really good series win. Everyone played really well right through the series. It feels good, nice to start well. We are also quite realistic. We have to keep our feet on the ground and be a bit realistic about this win,” Dravid said at the post-match presentation . The way he commended the opposition for turning up for the series despite a short turnaround between the first T20I and the T20 World Cup final. He also highlighted the fact that it wouldn’t have been easy for the Kiwis to play the series right after their World Cup heartbreak. View this post on Instagram “Not easy for NZ to play a World Cup final and then to turn up three days later and play three games in six days, was never going to be easy for them. It was nice from our perspective but we have to learn from this series and move forward," he said. “It's a long journey ahead over the next two years and we'll have our share of ups and downs,” he added. © Twitter Under Shastri, India became one of the top Test teams in the world but it couldn’t win any ICC title. With three major ICC events lined up in the next two years, including the new WTC 2021-23 cycle, Dravid will have ample opportunity to leave his mark on the Indian team. View the full article
  4. Earlier this week, it was revealed that former Indian cricketer, captain and National Cricket Academy head, Rahul Dravid was appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. According to the reports, ‘The Wall’ will be taking over the role while replacing Ravi Shastri as soon as the T20 World Cup 2021 concludes. Dravid’s first assignment as the head of the coaching staff would be the bilateral series between India and New Zealand on home turn when the Black Caps visit us for three T20Is and two Test matches. View this post on Instagram While most of the fans are overjoyed with the fact that Dravid has finally agreed to become the head coach, and that there is little to no doubt that the team will flourish under his command, a former Indian cricketer has raised an important point. Ajay Jadeja has asked whether the head coach or the selectors would hold the power to appoint the next captain of the squad in the shortest format of the game as Virat Kohli will be stepping down from the role in order to focus on his duties as a batter and also to manage his workload. View this post on Instagram “If there’s a role model of discipline and dedication, it’s Rahul Dravid. You want a lot of things from a coach, but discipline and dedication are probably the two prime things. It will be interesting to see who will make the next T20 captain - Rahul Dravid or [the selectors]. There’s no doubt in his praise but when someone becomes an Indian coach, if you don’t let him work or don’t use his vision then it’s all redundant, anyone can be a coach in that way,” Jadeja told Cricbuzz. “So, if you have brought Rahul Dravid, the biggest name, then at least go with his vision. This is my request to the board… If a man like Rahul Dravid has joined then please, please move alongside his vision, understanding and dedication, don’t tell him how to run the team,” he added. View this post on Instagram Dravid has done a phenomenal job improving the quality of young cricketers that the senior Indian side has had the privilege of picking players out of in times of extreme urgency. He was a great coach for the India A and the U-19 teams and worked hard on making the NCA a respectable institution once again. Hence, the former cricketer deserves all the authority that he needs to work his magic with the senior side as well. View the full article
  5. Day 1 of the second Test between England and India didn’t seem to do any favours for off-form batsman Cheteshwar Pujara who once again had to return back to the pavilion with a disappointing score off his bat. Having played 23 deliveries, the one-down batter managed to put up just nine runs on the board before it was the notorious James Anderson who managed to read him like a book and did a two-ball experiment which turned out to be successful. View this post on Instagram On the penultimate ball of the 50th over, Anderson tested the waters with a hefty inswinger which left the batsman startled. Doubtful of what would happen on the next delivery, he makes the mistake of pushing out and giving up an outer edge. Travelling to the third slip and into the very capable hands of Jonny Bairstow, the ball to end Pujara’s innings was delivered. This is when the fans of the Indian cricket team and those of the former Indian skipper and red-ball cricket master, Rahul Dravid, hopped on the internet to put an end to all the comparisons that take place between Dravid and Pujara. It seems like Pujara was never a good technical batter like Dravid. He just knows how to block the balls which can be easily driven for four. — The Cricket Statistician (@CricketSatire) August 12, 2021 Pujara only has the temperament of Dravid. Technically and range of shots wise, they are no way close. Dravid had all the shots in the book - cuts, drives, pulls, glances played off both foot and on both sides of the wicket. https://t.co/JtCoDOPl3o — Bubba Gump Shrimp Company (@wildcardgyan) August 12, 2021 Pujara comes.. Pujara struggles.. Pujara edges.. Pujara goes.. 2 minutes of silence to those who calls him as the replacement of 'The Great wall - Rahul Dravid' #ENGvIND — Pacchi (@prashanth_lc) August 12, 2021 Aisa paap lagega na pujara ko dravid se compare karne ka — avinab (@avinab16) August 12, 2021 Lol. Dravid is one of the best to have ever played the game. Pujara on his best day was Manjrekar on steroids. — Rohit G Banawlikar (@RohitBanawlikar) August 12, 2021 Ever since India won the incredible Test series in Australia - a series Pujara continues to consider one of his finest tours in International cricket, his performance with the bat has been subpar. Following the disappointment Pujara brought to the team during the World Test Championship finals, his position in the Playing XI became a major talking point, especially after skipper Virat Kohli spoke about bringing an overhaul to the team and bringing in people with the right attitude. “You have to reassess and replan and understand what dynamics work for the team and how we can be fearless. Bring in right people who have right mindset to perform,” Kohli had said after losing the WTC final to New Zealand. “We definitely need to work out better plans on understanding how to score runs. We have to stay in sync with the momentum of the game and not let the game drift away too much. I don’t think there are any technical difficulties as such,” he asserted. View this post on Instagram “It’s more down to game awareness and being more brave in putting bowlers under pressure and not allowing them to bowl in similar areas for longer periods of time unless it is absolutely overcast and ball swinging all over the place like it happened on day 1,” he added. 6. Former Indian opener and a massive social media presence in the Indian cricketing community, Wasim Jaffer has presented his “unpopular opinion” about why Rahul Dravid should not become the full-time head coach of the Indian squad, in his YouTube Channel. “I feel that he [Dravid] should not push himself to become the coach of an international team,” Jaffer says in the introductory bit of the video before getting into the nitty gritties of what he really means. View this post on Instagram Talking about the fact that there are two strings of the Indian cricket team at the moment that are scheduled to play Test and white-ball series England and Sri Lanka, respectively and almost simultaneously, Jaffer says: “It’s very rare to see two teams of an international team play cricket simultaneously, which goes on to show how strong India’s bench strength and how many good players there are. The credit obviously goes to the BCCI. The way they’ve developed the infrastructure and pathway is the reason for this strong supply line of players to the national team,” Jaffer says. View this post on Instagram “Even more credit, I think, should go to Rahul Dravid. The way he is working as a head coach at the NCA and the way he’s guiding U19 players, India A players, fringe players and even the international players who go to NCA [National Cricket Academy] when they aren’t in the team. There can’t be a better role model or mentor than Rahul Dravid.” “And now he’s going as a coach of this Indian team to Sri Lanka. So I am sure those youngsters will benefit a lot and I personally feel that he should not push himself to become the coach of an international team.” NEW VIDEO Unpopular Opinion: Rahul Dravid shouldn't become India coach full time cos couple of other teams need him more. Link: https://t.co/hgd0a6zWdn #SLvIND #RahulDravid pic.twitter.com/QQaR9bbw3c — Wasim Jaffer (@WasimJaffer14) July 9, 2021 “I feel he needs to work with the U-19 and India A players at the NCA. I believe the international players who play in the Indian team are a finished product but Rahul Dravid’s mentorship and guidance is more needed at the U19 and India A level as it can help to reach the next level.” “He needs to stay at the NCA for a longer period for out bench strength to keep on growing even stronger. It’s a very exciting series in front of us. Lots of youngsters to look out for and I wish all the players all the very best,” Jaffer concludes. Watch Jaffer’s video here: Unfortunately for the Ranji Trophy legend, not all of his fans agree with his ‘hot take’ this time around, which led to some mixed reactions on Twitter when he first shared the video: We're losing ICC events here, and you want India to give away Dravid ? — Ajinkya Ashok Darshane (@ajinkyadarshane) July 9, 2021Wasim Bhai NCA coaching apko bhi apply krna hai. 7. Shubman Gill has seen a meteoric rise in international cricket in the last few months, establishing himself as the first-choice opener alongside Rohit Sharma in the longest format of the game. Gill has time and again emphasised that after his father, former India great Rahul Dravid played a key role in his development during the early phase of his career and he values their advice immensely. Recently he appeared on a cricket podcast and was given in a hypothetical situation where he could only pick one of the two pieces of advice given to him by his father and Dravid, and the answer that he gave proved why is one of the most promising young talents in the country. Oozing with confidence, Gill answered that he would do what he thought was right as that would allow him to play his natural game without worrying about the end result. “I wouldn’t listen to either of the two, I would just listen to myself and decide ‘What do I wanna do? Do I wanna do this? Or do I wanna do that,” Gill said. View this post on InstagramHe further explained the rationale behind his decision saying that by going with his mind, he would make sure that he has no one else to blame for his dismissal and he would know that he got out playing the way that suits him the best. “At the end of the day, when you get out the only person who will be regretting the most is yourself. You would be thinking why I listened to them, at least I could have gotten out doing my thing and this way would have no one to blame it upon,” he added. View this post on InstagramGill also spoke about the coaching technique of Dravid which is focused more on developing a player’s mental strength rather than tinkering with his technique too much. “Rahul sir never asks a player to change his technique or way of playing, rather he tries to make the player mentally strong. He tells you to analyze the game and play well in difficult situations” Gill said on ‘The Grade Cricketer’ podcast. “Rahul sir’s technique was so strong but he never asked any batsman to change their technique. He works on strengthening the mental state of the batsman,” he added. ️ #TeamIndia announce their 15-member squad for the #WTC21 Final pic.twitter.com/ts9fK3j89t — BCCI (@BCCI) June 15, 2021 With only a couple of days left for the World Test Championship final to begin, the India players are gearing up for arguably the biggest Test match of their career. The management has announced the 15-member squad for the summit clash, with Shubman Gill also in it, who is expected to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma. View the full article
  8. Ever since the fight for the position of the head coach of the Indian cricket team started back in 2017 with Anil Kumble’s resignation, the squad has achieved great heights under the coaching capacity of Ravi Shastri. Still, the majority of the fans would not blink an eye before cheering Rahul Dravid if he decided to contest for Shastri’s role in the team even today. Thank you! pic.twitter.com/eF5qVzdBRj — Anil Kumble (@anilkumble1074) June 20, 2017 However, on more than one occasion, ‘the Wall’ has openly spoken about how he was not interested in the job and even refused to come on board despite being the frontrunner for the spot back in 2007, simply because he wanted to take care of his family. But now, with the Indian Premier League suspended indefinitely, the Men in Blue look forward towards their next challenge - India’s tour of Sri Lanka, and the fans’ long-lost dream of watching Jammy coach Virat Kohli and Co. may finally be realised. According to Cricbuzz - There are talks about Rahul Dravid and staffs at NCA will be in the coaching staff for Indian team in the upcoming Sri Lanka tour for 3 ODI and 3 T20. — Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) May 10, 2021 "We have planned a white ball series for the senior men's team during the month of July where they will play T20 Internationals and ODIs in Sri Lanka," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told PTI on Monday. According to Cricbuzz, Dravid and his coaching staff from the National Cricket Academy might travel in Colombo with the rest of the roster for the three T20Is and three ODIs that are reportedly scheduled to take place between 13th and 27th July. India tour of Sri Lanka: 1st ODI - 13th July. 2nd ODI - 16th July. 3rd ODI - 19th July. 1st T20i - 22nd July. 2nd T20i - 24th July. 3rd T20i - 27th July. - Venues to be finalised later. — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) May 10, 2021 Now, with no information on Ravi Shastri's unavailability for the tour, it will be interesting to see how the Indian cricket team utilises Dravid’s expertise as the head of the coaching staff, who helped the U-19 Team India lift the World Cup trophy back in 2018. Dravid was trusted with the duty of the head coach of both, the U-19 team and the India A team from 2016 to 2019 before he was appointed as the Director of Cricket Operations at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy - the primary training and rehabilitation center for our cricketers.
