  4. I’ve been using the MacBook Air for the past three weeks and at first, I was quite sceptical of what the laptop was capable of. I was under the notion that a mobile SoC such as Apple’s M1 could never beat offerings by Intel and AMD. However, in my time, I’ve come to realise that the M1 chip not only beats Intel-powered laptops but puts them to shame. What was particularly surprising about the M1 MacBook laptop was its battery backup. This laptop can last you all day on a single charge and this is all thanks to the new M1 SoC. Apple is known for making beautiful laptops and often ignoring the hardware which is not the case for the M1 laptop. In fact, this laptop uses a familiar design but improves majorly on its hardware capabilities. The new M1 chip brings significant speed and efficiency improvements that have left Intel-powered devices far behind. The M1 Chips is Apple’s first integrated SoC that integrates CPU, GPU, RAM and more all together for Mac. In comparison, the new M1 chip is 2.8x faster than its Intel MacBook Pro counterparts and the GPU is 5x faster as well. While these claims do put the M1 MacBook on a pedestal, it’s time we put it to test ourselves. Design And Display The M1 MacBook Pro does not look any different from previous models as it uses the same uniform rectangular shape, aluminium body and this time around a fan-less body The MacBook Pro also come in silver and space gray but we would have liked to see other colours as well. The MacBook Pro also has the same large trackpad, Touch Bar, and a thin hinge. There are only two USB-C ports that can be used to charge the laptop using a compatible power-delivery charger. The two USB-C ports also support DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gbps), and USB 4 connections. We would have liked to see more ports here for better connectivity as often we have found, two ports are not enough for accessories. In terms of networking, the M1 MacBook also includes 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 networking for faster data speeds. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla When it comes to the display, the 13.3-inch panel comes with a very high resolution at around 2,560 by 1,600 pixels. The laptops are available in two sizes i.e 13-inches or 16-inches where we got to test the smaller variant for the purpose of this review. The colours on the display are as vibrant and sharp as previous models if not better. The display also supports the True Tone feature which comes handy for automatically switching the white balance according to the ambient light. The display is also rated to display the entire P3 colour gamut which can also be found on the M1 MacBook Air. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla The Touch Bar have all the function keys you need to control operations on the laptop and even provides additional functions depending on the app you are using. Apps like Pages, Safari and Photoshop make use of the touch bar with specific functions such as making bookmarks or predicting words. Having said that, it is entirely up to developers to make use of the Touch Bar and we will see more support from apps. The one thing that sets the MacBook Pro apart from the Air is the Touch Bar which is more than enough reason to get the “Pro” model over the air. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, laptops now need better microphones for Zoom calls and, Apple has also added a three-microphone array. These microphones are said to filter out 40% of hiss sounds as compared to previous models. Similar to the previous models, the M1 MacBook Pro also comes with four full-range speakers which have two upward-firing tweeters. These speakers are located right next to the keyboard at each side. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla My major complaint with laptops is the use of cheap trackpads which causes enough friction when using for extended periods of time. It is a problem on the new Xiaomi Mi Laptop available in India and many other Windows laptops available in the market. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the trackpad is of excellent quality that is smooth and even has haptic feedback embedded underneath. The trackpad is highly accurate and the clicking action feels satisfying no matter where you click on the pad. Performance The biggest change in the new MacBook Pro is its M1 SoC as it uses a different architecture than Intel’s Core i5 or i7 CPUs. Since the SoC is based on ARM’s architecture, it is theoretically capable of running iOS apps as well. Since the architecture has changed, even apps will have to be made especially for the M1 SoC which developers are at work right now. Having said that, Apple’s own first-party apps such as Pages, Numbers, Garage Band, Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro have been optimised for the new SoC. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla Since apps are being ported over to support the M1 SoC, many of the apps run in emulation which does affect the overall performance for now. Certain apps took longer to open and some took longer to install. However, once the apps were running, most of the apps were smooth to use. If you are video creator, transcoding videos are probably the most performance heavy processes you will deal with. The MacBook Pro can take 16 minutes to transcode a 4K video to 1080p on Handbrake. That’s just one minute short of Core i7 powered laptops that run handbrake natively. However, once we started running the Beta version of Handbrake that has been optimised for M1 processor, the transcode time dropped to 8 minutes. On AnTuTu benchmark, it had a score well over 1 million points which is a first for any laptop. On Geekbench 5, the laptop scored 1687 (single-core) and 7433 (multi-core) which is tiger than Apple’s own MacBook Pro powered by the Intel Core i9-9989HK (8-core chip). On GeekBench 5, single and multi-core scores for the M1 powered MacBook Air are 1687 and 7433 respectively. On the other hand, Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro powered by the Intel Core i9-9989HK (8-core chip) and 64GB RAM scores 1097 and 7014 respectively. On Cinebench, when testing the latest R23 release that supports the M1 SoC, it blows the competition out of the water with its superiority. It scored 7508 (multi-core) points and 1498 (single-core) which is quite impressive for an ARM-based SoC. The 2019 16-inch low-end MacBook Pro with a 2.6GHz processor, it scored 6912 points in the multi-core test and 1,113 points in the single-core test. In terms of graphics, GFXBench 5 test showed that the laptop is capable of running around 80fps on the demanding Aztec test at a resolution of 1400p. This is more than enough to run games on the laptop that are available on Apple’s Arcade service, but for more demanding games we can expect frames to dropdown to lower figures. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla In terms of battery life, the MacBook Pro is capable of lasting 22 hours on a single charge which involved watching video content over Netflix at half brightness level and using AirPods Pro via Bluetooth. Considering the competition, the MacBook Pros battery last longer than Dell’s XPS 13 and Apple’s own Intel-powered by MacBook Pros. The Final Say If you already are an iPhone user and want a MacBook that will make your experience cohesive, the new M1 MacBook Pro is a great laptop to consider. It will be running most of your iOS apps natively on the laptop and is more powerful than Apple’s own Intel Core i9 powered laptops. If you are a content creator or a graphic designer, you will see a significant jump from Intel-powered laptops. View the full article

  6. In another episode of ‘bizarre incidents’ – a Chinese woman decided to penalize her husband after she found out that he cheated on her. According to Mail Online, she caught her husband half-naked in bed with another woman. © Unsplash So, she decided to tie him in a cage and throw him into a river. This incident took place in Maoming city which is located in Southwestern and was caught on camera by Chinese media. The half-naked husband was shocked when a few men entered his room and caught him with his mistress. The men tied him in a bamboo cage and carried him out of the building and then just dropped him in a nearby river. However, he was taken out of the water-body. © Unsplash Later, the man was taken to the hospital and it was found out that didn’t undergo any major injuries. Also, the local cops soon caught the men who were involved with the incident and the authorities termed it as ‘romantic disputes’. Also, this bizarre way of punishing people is known as ‘dip in a pig cage’ and was practiced by ancient Chinese to punish people for the crime of adultery. At that time, whosoever underwent this punishment was strapped to the cage tightly so he or she couldn’t escape and was left to die in the drowning water. © Unsplash Well, we can’t deny that cheating on your partner breaks them from within but then nobody should take the law into their own hands. 7. The iPhone 12 feels like the smartphone Apple always wanted to make for everyone and it seems like the Cupertino giant has achieved that goal. The iPhone 12 is probably the only smartphone that delivers everything you need from a 2020 smartphone and puts almost every flagship Android device to shame at the same time. While the phone may sound and look like a cheaper iPhone when compared to the Pro models, but the real picture is further from the assumption. It packs a powerful chipset, a great display, cameras that can take great pictures and oozes premium design ethos from the moment you hold the phone. Here's what we think about the iPhone 12 that is now available to buy in India: Design and Display © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla Probably our favourite thing about the iPhone 12 is its new squared-off design that we haven't seen since 2014. Apple brilliantly infused the iPhone 5 design with a modern smartphone design that has resulted in a smartphone that feels like a dream to hold each time. It feels like a solid smartphone to hold, thanks to the flat edges, thicker curved corners and an overall design that feels like a huge throwback to the iPhone 5. While people prefer sleeker, thinner smartphones in general, in the iPhone 12's case it simply feels right at home and gives it that unique vibe you can't find amongst Android smartphones today. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla Not only is the new design district from everything else out there, it also makes it easier to grip. The iPhone 12 also feels more compact than the iPhone 11 design. It weighs only 164 grams, which is far lighter than the iPhone 11. It features magnets at the back that flawlessly snaps on with the MagSafe wireless charger. While many would find this a gimmick; the new design choice by Apple makes a significant difference in real-world usage. For starters, when using wireless chargers, your phone is mostly restrained to a charging pad and would start charging once you remove it to use it. However, with a MagSafe charger, since it gets attached to the back of the phone, you can wirelessly charge and use the phone at the same time. Such attention to detail has long been overlooked by Android OEMs which we expect to be copied in the next few months. Apart from the few changes, the iPhone 12 comes with the Face ID notch at the front albeit smaller than before. The phone also uses Apple's proprietary lightning port for charging and dual-speaker grilles right next to it. Finally, the iPhone is rated for IP68 water and dust resistance meaning it can withstand water up to a maximum depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla When talking about the display, Apple has finally decided to use the same 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display it used for its Pro models. The iPhone 12 comes with other improvements such as a higher resolution and better durability, thanks to the “Ceramic Shield” coating. The display has a resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels, higher than the iPhone 11's LCD 1,792 x 828 resolution display. The display has other noticeable upgrades such as higher colour accuracy, deeper black tones and great contrast ratio to make the overall picture look lush and vivid. We do feel that Apple's Face ID notch does interfere with the viewing experience and is not as streamlined as 2020 Android smartphones. We would also like to see some form of always-on screen that could show the time and other important information which is a standard feature on Android smartphones that use OLED screens. The iPhone 12's display is also rated for HDR10 content on OTT platforms and has a peak brightness level of 1200 nits, highest on any iPhone ever. The HDR display makes viewing HDR-compatible movies and TV shows a dream to use and looks better than the OnePlus flagship phones even though it has the same certification for its displays. The display is also rated for Dolby Vision content which makes the iPhone 12's display most versatile when considering all the different video formats it supports. Cameras The iPhone 12 has also made a significant jump in the camera departments as the main sensors have an aperture of f/1.6. This means it has the ability to take in more lights which results in better low-light photos. This lower aperture is most useful when capturing images in dark environments and when capturing Night Mode images. From the sample images, you will see how great the iPhone 12 really is at capturing images in the dark. In our testing, the Night Mode has seen significant improvements and also works faster than the iPhone 11 Pro. The only smartphone that is at par in Night Mode performance is Google's latest Pixel 4a. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla Night Mode also works on other cameras including the ultra-wide sensor and the selfie camera. Pictures from both lenses look bright and we loved using it on the selfie camera the most as it wouldn't have been possible to get such bright pictures without using artificial light. Even in absolute darkness, selfie images can look bright enough as if they were captured during dusk. In terms of normal photography, colours in images look true to life and more realistic than anything else we've used. Even though the iPhone 12 does use computational photography for colour correction, it does not fiddle with the contrast and white balance too much to make it look unrealistic. For videographers, the iPhone 12 is capable of capturing 4K video at 60 frames per second and is way ahead of its competition. In fact, the video quality looks better than what you capture with action cameras such as the GoPros. If you want even better video footage, you can also shoot in Dolby Vision HDR up to 30 frames per second. Additionally, you can also capture time-lapse videos in night mode if you want to capture a busy street or the night sky. Check out some of our camera samples during the Diwali festive season around New Delhi: Performance Apple has already dethroned every smartphone out there with its new A14 Bionic chipset that has been made with a 5nm fabrication process. It is the world's first processor using the 5nm node making it the most efficient and powerful chipset for a smartphone. In fact, Apple has managed to squeeze in 11.8 billion transistors that are capable of doing 11 trillion operations per second. In our Geekbench 5 tests, the iPhone 12 had impressive 1531 (Single-core) and 2594 (multi-core) scores. In real life usage, the iPhone 12 is capable of running modern games and multitasking without any issues and is also now the fastest phone at opening and closing multiple apps. We played a few hours of Genshin Impact and it worked flawlessly without any frame-rate drops even when there was a lot going on. Apple Arcade games like the latest Samurai Jack game runs better and far smoother on the iPhone 12 as compared to the Nintendo Switch. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla Battery life is also at par with previous iPhone models where after 15 hours of non-stop use, it still had around 33% of battery life remaining. The iPhone 12 can certainly last a full day and more when used moderately. However, since we can't test 5G, we can't say how the battery life will be affected. The iPhone 12 is also compatible with 18W PD chargers which solves the problem of it not coming with a charging brick with the box. You can buy a USB-C PD charger for fast-charging purposes, however you do need the USB-C to Lightning cable that comes in the box. Accessories We've already mentioned how the MagSafe charger works with the iPhone 12, however Apple has also launched a series of accessories that are MagSafe compatible. All of the new cases also come with magnets that seamlessly attach to the body of the phone and subsequently can also be used to attach Apple's MagSafe leather wallet. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla Each time you attach a MagSafe compatible device with the iPhone, you will hear a sound and see a ring animation. Both the sound and animation are triggered thanks to NFC chips on the accessories and the iPhone, however that is the only function we know of right now. Alternatively, you can also get regular cases from third-party manufactures such as Mujjo who make some incredible leather cases for all new iPhones. You can get these cases from e-commerce websites or their official website as well. MagSafe accessories by third-party vendors are also expected to arrive soon by companies like Belkin amongst many others. The Final Say © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla The iPhone 12 comes with enough improvements to make it one of the best smartphones Apple has made in years. Apple hasn't sacrificed in areas such as the display this time around while giving us all the photography features we'll need in 2020. With exceptional video capturing capabilities and a throwback premium design, Apple has made the almost perfect phone this year. View the full article
