  11. When the whole cricket fraternity was busy celebrating India’s historic win over South Africa, former Proteas skipper Quinton de Kock sent shockwaves by calling time on his Test career with immediate effect. Even before the series started, everybody knew that the former Proteas skipper would be taking paternity leave as he and his wife Sasha were about to welcome their first child. BREAKING: Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from Test cricket pic.twitter.com/mHzOdJ9mhX — ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) December 30, 2021 However, nobody expected de Kock to drop such a huge bombshell, at least not in the middle of an important Test series. What surprised the fans and experts the most was the fact that he was only 29 and had a whole career in front of him. While the whole world wondered about the possible reason that could have led to such an extreme call, de Kock said that it wasn’t an easy decision and the reason why he decided to quit playing five-day cricket is because he wanted to spend more time with his loved ones. BREAKING: #Proteas wicket-keeper batsman, Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect, citing his intentions to spend more time with his growing family. Full statement: https://t.co/Tssys5FJMI pic.twitter.com/kVO8d1e0Ex — Cricket South Africa (@OfficialCSA) December 30, 2021 “This is not a decision that I have come to very easily. I have taken a lot of time to think about what my future looks like and what needs to take priority in my life now that Sasha and I are about to welcome our first child into this world and look to grow our family beyond that,” De Kock was quoted as saying in the CSA release. My family is everything to me and I want to have the time and space to be able to be with them during this new and exciting chapter of our lives,” he added. View this post on Instagram The wicketkeeper-batter said it was all about setting his priorities in life and for him it was his family that took precedence over his Test career as he found something that he loved more than cricket. “I love Test cricket and I love representing my country and all that it comes with. I've enjoyed the ups and the downs, the celebrations and even the disappointments, but now I've found something that I love even more. View this post on Instagram “In life, you can buy almost everything except for time, and right now, it's time to do right by the people that mean the most to me. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been a part of my Test cricket journey from the very beginning. To my coaches, teammates, the various management teams and my family and friends - I couldn't have shown up as I did without your support. “This is not the end of my career as a Protea, I'm fully committed to white-ball cricket and representing my country to the best of my ability for the foreseeable future,” de Kock said in the press release. View this post on Instagram Shocked with this whole development, some fans firmly believe that there is more to this story than meets the eye. They argued that given the bitter relationship the batter had with the country’s cricket board, it could be possible that he was made to pay the heavy price for standing up to the board. He's being pushed? — James (@James59263500) December 30, 2021Premature exit from De Kock, pulled out too early. — 1397/11 (@_rahiisays) December 30, 2021He's playing T20 and league cricket since years. Why now suddenly? I think it's because of his paternity leave. Maybe CSA didn't agree to it. — Nihal G Shenoy (@shenoynihal) December 30, 2021Things are not right in South African cricket. CSA managing players poorly, too much politics has ruined cricket there. Think quota system is creating too much tension. — TheDoc (@TheDoc896) December 30, 2021it’s kinda annoying because i pretty confident that it’s the politics going on in south africaa cricket board. one of my favorite team tbh — alisha verma (@theduckiecow) December 30, 2021CSA politics and he became fed up with it not that I blame him. He was already detached from the side ever since the T20 World Cup — Accountability Champion (@champion_genera) December 30, 2021Things that bad with CSA after the knee fiasco!? — Simon R (@SimonRTweets) December 30, 2021Script was written in T20 World Cup. — Ajay (@being21ajay) December 30, 2021Wouldn’t say I am surprised after what happened during the T20 World Cup, but also terribly sad to see a 29-year-old hugely talented player chucking up Test cricket prematurely https://t.co/ufAFkh0Pbx — Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) December 30, 2021Joining the two dots, some fans recalled how de Kock was dropped from South Africa’s Playing XI after he defied CSA’s order during the T20 World Cup and refused to take a knee ahead of their league match against the West Indies. He was included in the side only after he retracted from his initial stance and joined his teammates in standing against racism. View this post on Instagram While some sympathised with De Kock, there was no dearth of people who viewed this whole episode with a completely different lens and blamed the southpaw for prioritising money over playing for the country. They argued that the real reason why he hung up boots in Test format was because he was enticed by the idea of earning more money playing different T20 leagues around the world. Why everyone loves to retire soo soon nowadays? they can't handle the pressure or what. https://t.co/3e1XUcxoqa — Bharat (@savageunclown45) December 30, 2021Stunned! The decision will only make South Africa Test side poorer. But even though it depends on an individual, should cricketers consider country or family first, still remains an argument https://t.co/GzDsAr1sia — Samrat Chakraborty (@dahnumber7) December 30, 2021To ask for a paternity leave is fine. But I can't understand why he's quit altogether... he's still so young and had quite a career ahead... — KSR (@KShriniwasRao) December 30, 2021Quinton de Kock’s shock retirement should spark conversations around just how unattractive a Test career is to most players outside the richest 3-4 cricket nations..#SAvIND #dekock — Hemant (@hemantbuch) December 30, 2021Whatever the reason may be, the fact remains that the sport has seen one more extremely talented cricketer walk away from Test cricket, which is not a good sign for the game's oldest format. 12. After the disappointment of this year’s IPL, nobody thought that David Warner would go on to help his side win their maiden men’s T20 World Cup title and also clinch the highest individual honour -- the Player of the tournament award. View this post on Instagram Warner, the last overseas skipper to win an IPL title, was not only relieved of his captaincy duties by the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) but was also made the scapegoat for the team's poor performance and was left out of the Playing XI for the majority of the season. View this post on Instagram Not just that the southpaw wasn’t even included in the extended squad, meaning he wasn’t allowed to travel with the team to the stadium and enjoy the match from the dugout. He was forced to follow the game from his team hotel and this decision had ruffled quite a few eyebrows. Despite all this, neither fans nor Warner were given any explanation by the SRH management, who kept insisting that the decision was solely based on the cricketing logic to help the team improve their performance in the remaining matches. View this post on Instagram Even Warner had complained that after what he had done for the franchise, he expected better communication from the SRH leadership group but he was discarded like scrap material. “The other disappointing thing for me was not being explained why I was dropped as captain. If you want to go along the lines of form, it is a difficult one because, I guess whatever you have done in the past would have some weight moving forward, you would think,” Warner had said in an interview with Sports Today last month. View this post on Instagram The speculations were rife that Warner’s exclusion had nothing to do with his lean patch but till now there was nothing concrete to substantiate that claim. But now we have. Eulogising about the impact that Warner had on Australia's World Cup winning campaign, his former teammate Brad Haddin, who was also part of the SRH support staff as an assistant coach, has shared some insights into the decision to drop the Aussie veteran. The former Aussie wicket-keeper said that the decision to drop Warner from the squad “was not a cricket decision”. He also added that watching Warner from close quarters he always knew that he was not out of form. All he lacked was a little bit of match practice. View this post on Instagram “I tell you what it was not a cricket decision that he was not playing for SunRisers Hyderabad. I think the one thing you have to realise with David is that he was not out of form, he was out of match practice. They had a long break, he did not go to Bangladesh or West Indies. But he turned up in really good headspace. He was hitting the ball well, circumstances were out of our control, even the coaching staff,” said Haddin on the Grade Cricketers Podcast. “But it was not because he was out of form. All he needed was some match time, he was hitting the ball well. He just needed to spend some time in the middle to get the rhythm again. As the tournament went on, you have seen his class. He got a bit of rhythm back into his game and he was good to watch,” he added. Haddin didn’t elaborate much about the decision but it provided the SRH fans with enough raw material to come up with their own theories. "Not a cricket one".....so this clearly means it wasn't a call from management but the influence of the owners probably. — Sanskar Gemawat (@_SanskarG) November 16, 2021Yeah. Just saw. Must be the owners then, but I doubt that. They should just reveal the reason and end this drama. This is torture for SRH fans. — Zahra (@paavambitch) November 15, 2021Now this is very interesting... Expecting more detailed answer — Kavit Zatakia (@kavitzatakia) November 15, 2021Just give us the reason and be done with it. The fans deserve atleast that much for all the support through the years.@SunRisers — G K Reddy (@kalyang9) November 15, 2021means the owners of srh were the reason of his exit from the team. — HRSM (@imhrsm) November 16, 2021 Some of the accused the team owners of interfering with the cricketing decisions while others demanded that the franchise issue a detailed explanation and rid them of this torture.
