  1. Residents of tiny village left surrounded by floodwater after torrential monsoon rains face starvation and disease
  2. People likely to get diarrhea, cholera, gastroenteritis, typhoid, dengue and malaria; outbreak would require Rs1 billion in supplies
  3. We’re only one week into the new year and already, almost everyone I know went from ‘Happy New Year’ to ‘I have fever’ pretty damn fast. Riding the third wave - struck by either Covid or it’s variant Omicron, 2022 has had an infectious start, to say the least.. And if there is one thing that is keeping them going, apart from mindless social media scrolling and binge-watching TV shows, it is a medicine that has acquired the status of a ‘sanjeevini booti’ among Indians - Dolo 650. Dolo 650 owner these days pic.twitter.com/v98oQAtE2x — Khushi (@hit_wicket__) January 7, 2022 Ever since there has been a sudden rise in the number of COVID positive cases in the country, Indians have been stocking up on this medicine, pretty much the same way they did alcohol, when the government announced all wine and beer shops would be closed. And considering Indians have been popping this pill as their current favorite snack, netzens decided to launch a meme-fest in its honor as they come up with hilarious memes for all the Dolo-users. Here are some of the funniest memes! 5 problems 1 solution Problems: Headache, Body ache, Tooth ache, Fever, Cold .. Meanwhile, India has presently recorded 1,41,986 new cases of the novel coronavirus along with 285 deaths in the past 24 hours. And the WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has established that the new variant - Omicron, should not be considered ‘mild’ and be taken seriously. View the full article
  4. A video of an internet cafe that surfaced online shows boys playing a multiplayer game even though the cafe had been flooded with rainwater. The boys clearly ignored the rainwater that came up to their seats and continued to play the game despite the risk of being electrocuted. © Screengrab from Viral Press Sio Samson, the owner of the cafe in Cainta, Philippines recorded the weird encounter last week which has now gone viral. In the video, you can see that he tried to move the boys as the room kept filling with rainwater and was worried they could either be washed away or be killed by an electric shock. © Screengrab from Viral Press The owner said, ‘We didn’t know the flood water would rise that day so when I saw them, I immediately took action and told them that I have to transfer the equipment to a higher place. After that video, they also stopped and left, none of us was hurt." What saved the boys from getting electrocuted was that all of the electric cables in the cafe were above the water level and plugged into power sockets that were above head height. It’s a very common feature in homes and shops that are in areas prone to flooding. The Typhoon In-Fa has been wreaking havoc in parts of the Philippines which has caused numerous homes and businesses to flood. Thousands of people were evacuated from areas that were worst hit. The floods have also destroyed agricultural land and crops. © Screengrab from Viral Press The storm is now heading towards the East China Sea and has become even more intense, causing heavy downpours across Luzon island. The same typhoon had caused dozens of deaths in China and caused severe floods last week. Needless to say, these kids at the internet cafe were taking a massive risk by continuing to play even when surrounded by water. It was fortunate that all the power cables and outlets were above head height but it’s still quite risky as not only can PC components fry, it could have caused a power surge if the water went above by a slight fraction. 5. A controversy sparked off after Baba Ramdev claimed that medicines such as remdesivir approved by the Drugs Controller General of India for coronavirus treatment had failed. “Lakhs of patients have died because of allopathic medicines rather than a shortage of oxygen,” he claimed. On Saturday, in a session, he called Allopathy a ‘stupid science’ and attacked all the methods that allopathy uses to treat the deadly virus. Yoga guru claiming Allopathy as stupid science. He, then, posed 25 questions related to some of the most common diseases and asked for their solution and treatment in the allopathy and pharma industry. He said that there’s no permanent a solution that allopathy can provide. © Swami Ramdev Twitter Just yesterday, he was asked to come on board for a live session on AajTak with IMA’s Dr. Jayesh Lele and things took a dramatic turn after Baba Ramdev and Dr. Lele got into a verbal war. Dr. Lele slammed him for his statements and told him not to use the news platform to advertise his medicine Coronil. Here’s a clip of the live session where Ramdev Baba was snubbed by Dr. Lele and it has been going viral. 6. Alibaba’s and Ant Financial’s billionaire co-founder Jack Ma, who was reported missing amid a purported rift with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has resurfaced. Recently, a video of him surfaced on the internet in which he is addressing an annual teacher’s event that was launched by the Jack Ma Foundation in 2015-Jack Ma Rural Teachers Award. Even though the whereabouts of the entrepreneur are still unknown and the video does not indicate the place or time of the shoot, Jack Ma is heard saying that he will meet after the pandemic is over. Ma, who used to be an English teacher and founder of #Alibaba, also gives wishes to village teachers via a video on Wednesday, saying usually the activity is held in Sanya in southern Hainan but this year, due to #Covid19 it has to be done via video conference. pic.twitter.com/yfi7oPB5Sb — Qingqing_Chen (@qingqingparis) January 20, 2021 This is his first public appearance in months, he says in the video, "On this day, we have held an award ceremony in Sanya for 5 years and have paid tribute to teachers. However, this year we cannot for obvious reasons. But we are all connected via video calls and I promise to meet you all soon after the pandemic is over." Earlier this month, it was speculated that Alibaba and Ant co-founder Jack Ma had gone missing. He didn’t make any public appearances since October 2020 after his IPO was halted and regulators had ordered an antitrust probe into Alibaba. Now, the internet is flooded with memes and you’ll have to get ready to undergo a laugh riot. Lol Modi: can I come to China?no ones inviting me due to the pandemic. 7. It’s pretty much clear by now that the year 2020 is nothing less than bizarre and the new normal is to expect the unexpected. It also seems like some people have lost their sanity this year as well. Case in point, a weird-ass prank on YouTube which actually ended up evoking people’s interest for real. © Medium “But to our surprise when we uploaded this thing on to Airbnb, we had an insane amount of interest for people to come and stay within our establishment." Meanwhile, Rhys Simmons, co-founder of Passion Squad, added that he and his pals were not pleased with the price of their last Airbnb stay. So, they decided to make one of their own. "This was an insane accomplishment. To create the worst Airbnb in the world and then get a crazy amount of requests to stay is something that we will never forget. You never know, we may have to open this thing up for full-time business!" Simmons said. Would you actually pay to live someplace like this? View the full article
  8. The pandemic has been one of the worst things people have had to survive through. The lockdown resulted in a massive number of people left with no jobs, no way of earning and a bleak future. In the toughest of times, a lot of people resorted to selling something from home just to survive and mostly, that included cooking and selling food to earn money. One such new business venture was started by Sajana Shaji, a transwoman from Kochi, Kerala. Starting her own biryani business, she took out loans from grocery stores and meat shops to cook and sell the dish. Even though she was struggling herself, she managed to offer employment to four other transwomen, two women, and a few youths who had lost their jobs due to COVID-19. A wholesome endeavour, right? People coming together and working hard during a pandemic. © Facebook But nope, how can we forget where we live. Her thriving business started going downhill after a few local shopkeepers started harassing her and the entire group, turning away potential customers by lying about the food quality. If that wasn't awful enough, a group of people even beat up and abused Sanjana. A teary-eyed Sanjana shared a video on Facebook talking about all the harassment and abuse she had faced in the last month and how the loss of business resulted in a lot of wasted food and not enough profits. In her Live video, she said, "Look at the amount of food that has gone to waste. People keep asking us to work and live a decent life, instead of begging on trains and roaming the streets at night. But if the society does not allow us to work respectfully, then what are we supposed to do." Her venture went from selling 300 packets of biryani a day to just 20 and it's heartbreaking to see a group of hardworking people not being able to earn their well-deserved money. © Facebook Talking about how the police didn't help much, she said, "We asked the police to come to the place and intervene. They said they cannot come now and that they would come in the evening. When we asked what we were to do with the wasted biriyani, the Sub Inspector of the station callously told us to do whatever we wanted with it." Recalling the harrowing harassment she and one of her coworkers faced, she said, "We used up all our savings including the money I had set aside for my surgery to start this biriyani business. I kept thinking that earning a living was more important and that surgery came later. But now I have no means to continue the business. My associate Theertha, a transwoman who had just undergone surgery was touched inappropriately. He used a lot of sexist slurs against us when we confronted him." They have not done a single thing wrong - worked to earn money, started selling something people seemed to be enjoying, just trying to make ends meet - and yet, there are people out there who feel entitled to go and cause disruptions for them. © Facebook Thankfully, the video went viral and support started pouring in from everywhere. With her tough situation getting a better platform, the police have been active and taking the case seriously. © Facebook You don't need to understand the language to feel the pain. 10. A hilarious video of a man walking through flooded Venice is doing the rounds on the internet. Well, it is hilarious because the man, totally unaware of the water's depth, falls into the canal while managing to click a selfie. Venice was left completely devastated as it faced severe floods recently, and was hit by its highest tide in more than 50 years this month. Ever since the video was made available on Twitter by a user named StanceGrounded, it has garnered over 4.6 million views and also was retweeted 51,000 times. The clip shows a man walking through the heavily flooded area with a selfie stick in his hand to get that perfect shot, while completely forgetting that there is no ground left and falls into the canal. 13. Waves triggered by Typhoon Hato are seen in Hong Kong, China August 23, 2017. Photo: Reuters HONG KONG: Typhoon Hato, a maximum category 10 storm, slammed into Hong Kong on Wednesday lashing the Asian financial hub with wind and rain that uprooted trees and forced most businesses to close, while in some places big waves flooded seaside streets. There were reports of 34 people injured in Hong Kong while in the city of Macau, across the Pearl River estuary, three people were killed, authorities there said. In Hong Kong, more than 450 flights were canceled, financial markets suspended and schools closed as Hato bore down, the first category 10 storm to hit the city since 2012. "I've never seen one like this," Garrett Quigley, a longtime resident of Lantau island to the west of the city, said of the storm. "Cars are half submerged and roads are impassable with flooding and huge trees down. It's crazy." Many skyscrapers in the heart of Hong Kong were empty and dark as office workers stayed at home. Hato churned up Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour and triggered large swells and big waves on some of the city's most popular beaches, with serious flooding in low-lying areas. In residential districts like Heng Fa Chuen on densely populated Hong Kong island, waves smashed against the sides of oceanfront buildings and surged over a promenade, swamping roads and vehicles parked nearby. Construction cranes swayed at the tops of skyscrapers, windows imploded and nearly 200 trees were uprooted, while some people used canoes to venture out into flooded streets. Authorities downgraded the storm to a category eight by mid-afternoon. A woman stands beside a big wave on a waterfront Typhoon Hato hitting in Hong Kong, China August 23, 2017. Photo: Reuters High seas The storm also caused a power blackout across most of the gambling hub of Macau for about two hours, residents said, with disruption to mobile phone and internet networks. The former Portuguese colony's casinos, however, had backup power, two casino executives told Reuters. The storm also made landfall in China's Guangdong province, in Zhuhai city adjacent to Macau, China's Xinhua state news agency. Numerous flights and trains were canceled in Guangdong province, with Shenzhen's International Airport particularly badly hit. Thousands of residents along the Chinese coast were evacuated and fishing vessels were called back to port. Maximum winds near Hato's centre were recorded at a destructive 155 kph (95 mph). A senior scientific officer for the Hong Kong observatory warned that sea levels could rise several meters in some places, with the government issuing flood alerts and opening 27 shelters across the city. Trading in Hong Kong's financial markets was halted for the day, the stock exchange said. Typhoon Nida in August last year was the last storm to close the exchange for the whole day. The city's flagship carrier, Cathay Pacific, and Hong Kong Airlines said the majority of their flights to and from Hong Kong between 2200 GMT Tuesday and 0900 GMT Wednesday would be canceled. Other transport services, including ferries to the gaming hub of Macau and outlying islands in Hong Kong, were suspended as well.
  14. KATHMANDU: Elephants were pressed into service to rescue hundreds of foreign tourists trapped in a Nepal jungle safari park, officials said on Monday, as the death toll from flash floods and landslides after four days of heavy rains rose to 70. In Sauraha, 80 km (50 miles) south of Kathmandu, the Rapti River overflowed its banks, inundating hotels and restaurants and stranding some 600 tourists. Sauraha, on the fringe of Chitwan National Park, is home to 605 greater one-horned rhinoceroses, or Indian rhinoceroses, and is popular with foreign tourists, including Indian and Chinese visitors, mainly for elephant ride and rhino-watching. "Some 300 guests were rescued on elephant backs and tractor trailers to (nearby) Bharatpur yesterday and the rest will be taken to safer places today," Suman Ghimire, chief of a group of Sauraha hotel owners, said by telephone on Monday. Shiva Raj Bhatta of WWF Nepal said one rhino had died in the floods. Relief workers said 26 of Nepal's 75 districts were either submerged or hit by landslides after heavy rains lashed the mainly mountainous nation, home to Mount Everest and the birthplace of Lord Buddha. The death toll, which had stood at 49 on Sunday, was expected to rise with another 50 people reported missing in the floods and landslides, Information and Communications Minister Mohan Bahadur Basnet said. Basnet said more than 60,000 homes were under water, mainly in the southern plains bordering India. Estimates of losses were not available, with rescuers yet to reach villages marooned by the worst floods in recent years. "The situation is worrying as tens of thousands of people have been hit," Basnet told Reuters. Large swaths of farmland in the southern plains, Nepal?s breadbasket, are under water and the Himalayan country could face food shortages due to crop losses, aid workers said. "The heavy rains hit at one of the worst times, shortly after farmers planted their rice crop in the country?s most important agricultural region," said Sumnima Shrestha, a spokeswoman for US-based non-profit group Heifer International. Monsoon rains, which start in June and continue through September, are important for farm-dependent Nepal, but they also cause heavy loss of life and property damage each year.
  15. Apart from cricket, India as a nation surely punches well below its weight when it comes to sport. The country boasts immense human diversity, with limbs and muscles of all sizes, so race or genetic characteristics aren't a valid explanation. It's safe to say that India doesn't have a sports culture. The Indian athletes who have achieved international success are exceptions rather than being products of the country's sports system. There are scholarships and endowments for athletes that guarantee a basic minimum standard of living, but this system is fraught with bureaucratic red tape, political interference, conflicts of interest and needless to say, corruption. We are all aware of the pitiful state of affairs for Indian athletes. There is not enough nutritional food, their training is sub-standard and the infrastructure is a mess. But, that's not new. The world of Indian sports witnessed a new low as a promising national-level wrestler lost his life after getting electrocuted at a water-logged stadium in Ranchi. A stadium flooding, open electric wire, sportsman clearing water logging. Speaks a lot about India's sports facilityhttps://t.co/6EHiR8olrr — Sanjukta Basu (@sanjukta) August 10, 2017 Vishal Kumar Verma, who won gold at the last Jharkhand state competition in both freestyle and Greco Roman disciplines, died in a freak incident that happened due to a short circuit at the inundated and dilapidated stadium building which houses the office of the Jharkhand State Wrestling Association (JSWA). Built in 1978, the indoor stadium has been flooded with rainwater since the beginning of monsoon and its condition has only worsened due to heavy rains in the past couple of weeks. And sadly, the 25-year-old was pumping out water that had collected near the state wrestling body office when he was electrocuted. First, we don't give them the deserved facility, then we don't appreciate them and now this is how we pay back? Sad https://t.co/1v3NIZe5Df — Abhishek Jain (@cinemanabhishek) August 9, 2017 Vishal was later spotted by locals lying in an unconscious state and was taken to the nearby Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
