Virat Kohli took a splendid catch during Royal Challengers Bangalore's four-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede stadium on Tuesday (April 5). However, the former RCB skipper failed with the bat after being run out for five by the brilliance of Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal. While he did not entertain much with the bat in hand, Kohli sure brought smiles to the faces of RCB fans and cricket fans in general just as his team was inching closer to their second consecutive win in the 15th edition of the IPL. However, we are so used to saying some terms and phrases in day to day life that now, they just seem right and legit to us. Recently, a Reddit thread discussing common English mistakes that Indians make made us realise how our English completely sounds sensible and correct even when it’s not. © Colour Yellow Productions The OP wrote, “Because some sentences might sound correct, but it's not. And some sentences are technically right but they sound funny. i.e Hindi speakers often literally translate "Main aisa/aisi hi hun" as "I am like that only" Or "Tu pagal hai kya ?" as "Are you mad or what ?" these sentences are technically correct, but damn... sound so basic convent school kids' English.” © Dharma Productions Here are some phrases or words that we Indians mess up without realising and it’s hilarious how they still make sense: 1. “What Man? Sometimes, it gets difficult to digest that we’re in the year 2021, almost 30 years from the 90s, which the internet has collectively declared as the most nostalgic and memorable time in our collective history. For obvious reasons that we were all conveniently born then, most of us have the tendency to view our past through rose tinted glasses. There was a time back then, where TV shows could make you laugh without resorting to cheap tricks and dirty tropes. Comedy was simple, but smart too. Managing to keep an entire generation laughing, every day, without fail. It was a fine line that the Indian TV industry kowtowed well for almost a decade before it eventually became formulaic and regressed. However, let’s take a look at 5 TV shows from our golden childhood that had no business being as funny as they were: 1. Zabaan SambhalkeAn Indian remake of the popular show Mind Your Language, Zabaan Sambhalke had Pankaj Kapoor going about his duties as a Hindi language instructor, teaching students hailing from different nationalities. The comical gaffes and lost-in-translation scenes gave an entire generation of Indian audiences endless laughs. 2. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai An undeniable cult classic, the original run of Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai is often considered one of the finest comedy shows made for the Indian TV screens. Each character had their unique idiosyncrasies that didn’t feel forced or gimmicky, instead, they found a way to seamlessly trade setups and punchlines among them. From Rosesh’s neverending poems to Maya and Monisha’s constant bickering, this show had it all without making it feel out of place. Unfortunately, the second run of the series didn’t enjoy much applause. 3. Tu Tu Main Main First aired in 1994, Tu Tu Main Main packaged the desi saas-bahu relationship with a generous serving of smart and cutting humour. The fervent to-and-fro between Radha and Devkiben was something that a majority of the Indian TV viewing audience related to. It managed to keep things funny, without seeming forced. 4. Khichdi Khichdi brought about, what I believe, was the golden age for Indian TV. The show had seemingly cracked the perfect formula to make us laugh, with Praful’s ever so optimistic and self-assured way of responding to every “Prafooool… matlab...” sent his way by Hansa. The show was aptly named after the classic Indian dish. Simple, clean humour that was easily digested by the masses. 5. Mr. Bean At a point in time, Mr. Bean was one of the most frequently viewed TV shows in India. Rowan Atkinson’s peculiar mannerisms as the titular character won him widespread fanfare across the globe, including India. The beauty of Mr. Bean lay in the fact that language wasn’t required to understand the humour in the scenes. Our protagonist’s expressions were enough to transcend any form of linguistic boundaries. A classic. These are some of the shows I grew up with, shows that never failed to get a laugh out of me. And even in 2021, these shows make me laugh harder than anything on my TV screen, presently. There is an old adage ‘you live by the sword, you die by the sword’ and if we had to name one Indian cricketer who symbolises this completely, it’s hard to look past Rishabh Pant, who seems to have made this saying his motto in life. Whenever Pant steps out to bat, he makes things happen and puts the opposition under pressure with his fearless approach and the same happened on the reserve day of the World Test Championship final. © Reuters The 23-year-old player walked in to bat when India were in a precarious situation, having lost skipper Virat Kohli and the rock-solid Cheteshwar Pujara in quick succession in the opening hour. With the World Test Championship on the line, everybody expected Pant to be more sensible in his approach and learn from the mistakes of his teammate but he kept on playing his natural game, even after getting a reprieve early on his innings. He was batting on five when he edged a Jamieson delivery straight to the slip cordon but Tim Southee couldn’t get hold of the catch. Despite his dropped catch, Pant was unfazed and continued to take the bowlers on. MX Original Series Runaway Lugaai is one such laugh riot. No matter the mood you start the show in, by the end of it, you’ll be left laughing at the hilarious romantic dramedy. Wondering why? Well, the show has its wow moments and this spoiler-free highlight will make you want to binge-watch the show right away. Band, Baja Baarat & DemandsRunaway Lugaai is not your typical rom-com with a happily ever after. This drama has an over-excited groom Rajni (played by Naveen Kasturia) and a demanding bride Bulbul (played by Ruhi Singh) aka the Runaway Lugaai. Rajni was supposed to meet Bulbul’s sister for a wedding proposal but at the very first meeting, he fell head over heels for Bulbul’s beauty and wit. The amount paid to farmers for wheat in FY21 was Rs 75,060 crore vs Rs 62,802 crore in FY20, and for paddy in FY21 seen at Rs 1.72 crore vs Rs 1.41 lakh crore in FY20, the Finance Minister said. Amount paid to farmers for pulses in FY21 stood at Rs 10,530 crore vs Rs 8,285 crore in FY20. Unlike in the past, when agriculture often got no more than mere lip service, this time around, Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman took care to ensure her Budget prioritises farmers.
